Sisk on Carter, How the Montreal Deal Went Down, and the Canadians Tribute
By Mike Silva ~ February 19th, 2012. Filed under: New York Mets, Outside the Apple.
I wanted to share some final thoughts before we put the final touches on the tribute to Gary Carter.
Doug Sisk, Carter’s teammate from 1985-1987, joined me during my show tonight to discuss his memories of “The Kid.”
Hear Doug talk about the impact of Carter on the Mets, their appearance together in a bubble gum blowing contest on “Good Morning America,” and a funny story about some bad meat in the Pittsburgh postgame spread.
You can download the entire hour show here, which includes appearances from Jody McDonald of WIP and ESPN Radio, as well as musician Annakin Slayde, who wrote the song “Kid.”
You can also listen to Sisk’s interview from my YouTube channel below.

Back in 2010, I had a chance to attend the press conference for the Mets Hall of Fame induction of Frank Cashen, Davey Johnson, Darryl Strawberry, and Dwight Gooden. I spoke to Cashen about how the deal for Carter went down:
When approaching Montreal, team president and GM John McHale Cashen told him “if anyone hears I am talking about trading Carter I am going to get thrown out of Canada.” Three weeks and twenty five conversations later Carter was a Met. Imagine in the era of MLB Trade Rumors and new media? Montreal fans would have probably heard about this and may have swayed an already skeptical McHale against trading his star.

It was a touching tribute by the Montreal Canadians before their game with New Jersey, which is well worth your time to watch below:

His nickname was “Kid”, not “The Kid”. Some get it right, some don’t.
