Do the Yanks Need 7 Relievers?

By Mike Silva ~ March 9th, 2011. Filed under: Mike Silva, New York Yankees.

I had this discussion with NYBD contributor Joe DelGrippo last night. Yesterday morning I predicted the Yanks 25 man roster that would include four bench players and seven relievers. Knowing that Joba Chamberlain could go multiple innings does it make sense carrying Sergio Mitre or Bartolo Colon? Why not take an extra bench player like Jorge Vazquez, Justin Maxwell, or Ramiro Pena.

Although I think Mitre or Colon will be rarely used, the Yankees starting lineup is set. Andruw Jones ,and whoever comes north as the backup catcher, will get the most time. A fifth bench player with this offense is unnecessary. I say keep the extra pitcher just in case. Although you could make an argument it’s not the best use of roster space.

What do you think?
