Mets Cross the “Angry Red Menace”
By Mike Silva ~ April 2nd, 2009. Filed under: Mike Silva.
Frank Russo, NYBD contributor, has always been known to rankle a few Red Sox fans. I always have had an amicable relationship with Red Sox – to date. Whether it be Dave Devlin over at Up on the Monster, former Red Sox OF Fred Lynn, or simply praising the way Theo Epstein conducts business the RSN has never annoyed me. That is until today when NESN showed their true pom pom colors by attacking SI’s article which predicted the Mets as 2009 World Series Champs.
I have no issue with someone writing why the Mets won’t make the playoffs, but NESN decided to attack the Mets instead of providing an unbiased opinion. From uneducated statements about Johan Santana’s health to mocking the Mets anniversary patch NESN provided what their real agenda is: waving red colored pom poms.
This doesn’t surprise me. Boston fans are great and, at times, New Yorkers can learn from them. However, Boston tends to be one of the most provincial towns in the United States. I will never forget the night when Dan Shaughnessy of the Boston Globe was on WGBB’s “The Starting Nyne” and handicapped the NL East race. He mentioned how it looks like the division comes down to the Phillies and Marlins. What made this laughable was how the Mets were in first place that very same night.
Have the Mets crossed the “angry red menace”? It appears so. Maybe it’s because they share the same city as the Yankees. Perhaps it’s lingering anger from 1986. More likely it’s because the national media has cooled on kissing their fanny. Two World Series in five years haven’t eased their jealousy and paranoia towards New York. Fears about their winning cycle ending might be too hard to stomach. Remember, nothing lasts forever. If I didn’t know any better I would have thought NESN resided in Philadelphia.

Well this isn’t necessarily a NESN thing, Mike, so ease up on them a bit. I think the author, Neil Keefe, is to blame for this crap. Afterall, I don’t like Frank Russo, his articles, and the way he always deletes my comments; but I don’t blame NYBD and stop visiting your site. I understand that Frank’s opinions are his own and not necessarily those of NYBD, just as Neil’s opinions are his own and not necessaryily those of NESN.

Fine. Bring it on. A lot of it is the general ‘new york’ thing.
Let’s see if we can supplant the yankees as hated NY rival. How’s an exhibition lashing and a ’86 rematch sound?
