What Will a Billion Buy You?

Obviously not a championship for the Mets. Maury Brown over at the Biz of Baseball breaks down the total payroll investment for each team over the last ten years (1999-2008). The Yankees and Red Sox have also gone over the “billion mark” with 1.6 and 1.1 respectively.

Makes any Mets fans argument that the Yankees spend too much money moot. On the flip side the bottom three spenders were Pittsburgh, Tampa, and of course Florida. Alex Rodriguez will make almost as much in 10 years as these clubs spend.

How does the Yankees spending on average $60 million a year more than the Mets over the last 10 years make criticism of the Yankees’ overspending moot?

Not only is that a significant difference, but if you look at just the last 5 years, that difference is even greater.

The Mets are definitely one of the wealthier teams in baseball, but they are nowhere close to the excesses of the Yankees.

What’s ironic is that while some want to label the Mets as spendthrift as the Yankees, some Mets fans continue to uses the lame term “Freddie Coupon.” Neither characterization is correct. Reality is somewhere in the middle.
