Bernazard Wants Pudge?

By Mike Silva ~ March 10th, 2009. Filed under: Mike Silva.

Jim Baumbach of Newsday has been covering the WBC down in San Juan the last week. At The Final Score today Jim had an interesting tidbit about Pudge Rodriguez.

To quote Mets assistant GM Tony Bernazard:

“Some of us wished we could have him with us, but the truth is that we have two catchers under contract,” Bernazard said minutes before disappearing from the public area towards the PR clubhouse.

And…

“It’s not so easy to make a move right now to make it possible to have him with us,” Bernazard said.

You make your own conclusions, but it seems that there was interest with the Mets and Pudge. For the record, the Mets should stick with what they have. Schneider knows the pitchers and, if healthy, Castro is a great right handed bat with pop. Every bit the hitter Pudge is at this point in his career. If they are going to spend any of the Duaner Sanchez savings it should be on a pitcher like Will Ohman, Joe Biemal, or possibly Pedro Martinez.

One quick note, also at TFS, Moises Alou will officially retire within the next week.

Pedro Martinez? He pitches a good 3 innings against the Nederlands and you want to sign that guy? What about his performance last yr. ?
And do you remember that bad toe?

Ramon Castro has never — NEVER — been healthy for a full season …. he is all about “potential” and never delivers on it. I would dump him in a second in favor of Pudge if I could …. I read this as no one wants Castro so the Mets are stuck with him. Just my two cents.
