Getting to Know the Figueroa’s
By Mike Silva ~ February 25th, 2009. Filed under: Mike Silva.
Our good friend Jimmy Scott from Jimmy Scott’s High & Tight did an interesting interview with Mets pitcher Nelson Figueroa. This is not your typical baseball interview, which is why I like it, but rather a look into what the life of a ballplayer is like.
We all, including me, sometimes look at these guys as a number on baseball card. They are cheered when they come through, booed when they fail, and sometimes hated. Jimmy shows us that, although it’s the life they chose, there are real world implications to being a ballplayer.
Nelson and his wife Alisa have to deal with family, career, and the normal things that all of us do. Just because he has a big game against Atlanta that night doesn’t mean that’s all is on his mind. Getting to the game requires a ton of sacrifice both financially and personally. The reward can be great, but the odds are severely against that happening.
Take a listen to the Figueroa’s talk with Jimmy about life, career, and making it in the big leagues. Hopefully, it will put perspective into why the game is about people and not stats.
