Mets & Yanks Have No Worries

By Mike Silva ~ February 22nd, 2009. Filed under: Mike Silva.

Many, including this site, have been concerned about the Mets lack of an experienced righty bat in the outfield. The Yankees might regret not acquiring Mike Cameron in center. Our good buddy Mike Francesa believes the Mets have holes in their starting rotation (surprise!). What happens if the Yanks young bullpen arms don’t come through? Spring is a time of optimism, but in New York it also could be a time to overanalyze and worry about what a team doesn’t have, and how it will derail any expectations. This year, more so then ever, that worry should be laid to rest. Why? Because the economic uncertainty of certain teams, big star contracts, and the inevitable bad season will ultimately lend some very intriguing talent come mid-season.

Think it’s too early to discuss this possibility? Think again. Scott Miller of CBS Sports had this quote from Blue Jays GM JP Ricciardi:

“The only way we’d trade him, I’d say, is if all hell broke loose and the stock market went nuts and (ownership) said we’ve got to take the payroll down to bare bones,” Ricciardi says. “And if that was the case, then we’d be trading a lot of people.”

It’s unlikely that owners will tolerate a bad start and allow their team to work through problems. So if we see a 2005 Houston Astros start from Toronto, Ricciardi won’t have the luxury of waiting for a second half surge. Teams such as Oakland, Los Angeles, Seattle, Chicago, and Detroit all have expensive stars that are candidates to be unloaded if things turn sour. If you add in young pitchers, who are arbitration eligible or nearing free agency, you can put pretty much any team into the equation.

The economy is probably an excuse for owners to do what use to be socially awkward to admit – not spend money on their team. Regardless, it’s a reality and the locals might be able to have numerous choices in the event they need to fix a possible hole. It’s a great position to be in.

So sit back, relax, and enjoy the spring. All the worries you have can, and probably will, be fixed at some point.

This article was talking about how both New York teams have needs. The young bullpen pitchers were the Yanks I was referring to, not the Mets.
