Selena Roberts Needs to Come Clean

By Frank Russo ~ February 12th, 2009. Filed under: Frank Russo Rants and Raves.

It’s been several days now since the A-Rod steroid news broke. I have held back and bit my lip, waiting for the right time to speak my mind on this matter. Well the time is now.

As a nationally known baseball researcher, I am well aware how players have cheated throughout the history of the game. Corked bats, alcohol consumption, the spit ball, the shine ball, the emery ball and amphetamines are just a few examples of how players have used illegal means to try to get an edge. A-Rod, like all players, is a mere human–a grown up playing a kids game. I, for one, was not surprised when I heard the news of his positive drug test. Then again, nothing surprises me anymore.

It is my opinion that Selena Roberts, the woman behind this story, has an agenda against Alex Rodriguez. If she did not, then she would have looked into getting the names of ALL the players who tested positive, and not just centered her efforts on him. When she appeared on WFAN’s midday show this week with Kim Jones and Evan Roberts, she tried to explain how her facts and research had to be exact, emphasizing that A-Rod was a human being who had a legacy. Are you kidding me? Roberts does not care about A-Rod as a person, as a ball player or his legacy. When Selena Roberts looks at A-Rod, she sees dollar signs. Why else would she have gone out of her way to go after him?

Many people in the main stream press are comparing Roberts to the likes of Woodward and Bernstein. Are you kidding me? Just look at how she reported on the Duke Lacrosse Rape Case. Roberts should have been held accountable for her “slip shod” journalism regarding that affair, yet, she was not. This despite her politically correct, “guilty until proven innocent” agenda. Did Roberts apologize to the three defendants when they were found to have done no wrong? Of course not. That is because she is above it all. She should never have to apologize for prematurely throwing three young men to the wolves.

If she wasn’t going to apologize to those students, then we should not expect her to come clean and explain her real motive for going after A-Rod. No, she will never admit that it is really all about garnering fame and money for herself. Of course, no one in the drive-by media wants to make the point that Roberts is going to make a lot of cash off of Alex Rodriguez misfortunes. Of all the radio talk show hosts, only Max Kellerman of 1050 ESPN in New York made mention of how Roberts is profiting, and will continue to profit from Rodriguez’s “pain.”

On Wednesday afternoon, Michael Kay reported that Roberts is actually withholding a lot of material for her upcoming book. This is according to David Hirshey, the executive editor at HarperCollins, her publisher. I guarantee that most, if not all of this “new material” is going to be on the salacious side. This proves to me beyond a shadow of a doubt that Roberts is more interested in making a name for herself than she is about journalistic integrity and getting to the truth. The more damage she can inflict on Rodriguez’s reputation, the better it is for her and the sales of her upcoming book.

There is one question I need to ask. Can we assume that Ms. Roberts would have donned her “wonder woman outfit” and gone after someone like a David Ortiz, if she had found out that the darling of the RSN, (that’s Red Sox Nation for those of you living in Totowa) had juiced? I highly doubt it. A-Rod is baseball’s biggest star, and that is why she went after him. He is also a Yankee, and that gives her added incentive to take him down.

Of course, A-Rod is far from innocent here. He cheated, as other players have, and he has apologized. No matter what he does for the rest of his career, his reputation is permanently tarnished, forever. For many fans, an apology will never be enough. That’s fine. Everyone has a right to their opinion.

As for Selena Roberts, it is also time for her to come clean as well. It is time for her to admit that she really does have a vendetta against A-Rod. So do us all a favor Selena. Stop hiding behind journalistic integrity and admit the truth. You will still make money and still sell your books. Remember what A-Rod said in his interview with Peter Gammons, “The truth can set you free!”

Wow….now there is some objective, rational analysis of a report that’s factually true. There is more assumption and speculation than I can even begin to unpack in this. More or less you’re arguing that her motivation is a personal vendetta by a closeted Yankee hater to persecute Alex Rodriguez, a player who happens to be the hightest paid and most visible professional athelete on the planet. It’s not news…just a vendetta?

    Please.

Selena Roberts, an Auburn University Journalism graduate, wrote an unsupported article accusing Chette Williams, an independent Minister, who mentored the athletes at AU, of being a financial conduit from a trustee, Bobby Lowder, to the the athletes. Lowder was instrumental in eliminating the School of Journalism at AU. More interesting is that the NY Times is the principle owner of the Tuscaloosa Newspaper and a minority owner in the Boston Red Sox. She seems to protect her employer
