Report: Pettitte Door Still Wide Open

By Frank Russo ~ January 24th, 2009. Filed under: Frank Russo Rants and Raves, Rumor Mill.

Our main Yankees source in Tampa has confirmed for us that the Yankees “have offered” Andy Pettitte a one year deal worth $10.5 million. While Yankee officials believe that Pettitte’s agents, the “Damning Duo” of Randy and Alan Hendricks, will turn down this new offer, they also believe that a deal can and will eventually get done. One potential scenario has New York offering a base salary of $10.5 million with performance bonuses. A contract such as this could potentially bring Pettitte’s overall salary back to the $16 million range that he and his agents so covet.

While all of this is speculation at the moment, fans of Pettitte should take heart that the lines of communication have remained open, even this late in the off-season. For what it’s worth, I have always believed that it was just a matter of time before a deal would eventually get done. A Yankees/Pettitte match makes too much sense not to happen. It adds another veteran presence to the rotation while also giving the organization more flexibility with it’s young, but still unproven starting pitching.

Hmmm. Maybe Russo is finally onto something.

Of course, I said weeks ago that a deal will be worked out eventually even though most in the media and Russo himself said otherwise.

It just didn’t make sense to go out and find another starter when their best option all along has been the guy sitting under their noses in Pettitte.

I wish the Mets would atleast consider Pettitte. No idea if Pettitte would consider the Mets, but he’s worth $12-13 million a year on a 1-year deal, statistically.
