Mets in Talks For Andruw Jones

By Mike Silva ~ December 29th, 2008. Filed under: Mike Silva.

ESPN’s Buster Olney cites sources that state the Mets and Dodgers have talked about a deal involving Andruw Jones.

Jones, who turns 32 next spring, hit .158 with 76 strikeouts in 209 at-bats for the Dodgers in 2008.

It appears that he is owed about $22 million (this includes signing bonus) as part of the two year deal he signed before the 2008 season.

I really don’t like anything about Jones. He appeared heavy, unmotivated, and confused throughout 2008. It’s doubtful that he can duplicate his 2006 season (41, 129 .262). For arguments sake, let’s say the Dodgers eat the 7 million in signing bonus. You still are on the hook for 15 million, and if you give them Castillo, it is an increase of $9 million in payroll. This money would better be spent, as I talked about on NYBD radio, signing Manny Ramirez or both Derek Lowe and Oliver Perez. Furthermore, this doesn’t seem like the kind of move that would give you the financial flexibility to sign Orlando Hudson.

We will do some more investigation on this, but I find it hard to believe that this will make the Mets better on the field, or give them payroll flexibility.
