It’s Ok To Sleep in Vegas

After doing eight hours of radio this week I got a “small sample” of the intensity of the baseball winter meetings. On Monday, Jim Baumbach of Newsday shared his winter meetings experience on our radio show. Joseph DelGrippo talked about the “lobby experience” and the smorgesboard of athletes, journalist, and sports television personalities abound at the Bellagio. It seemed everything stopped and it was a minute by minute ticker of updates.
Neil Best also tells a great story yesterday in Watchdog about fellow Newsday writer Ken Davidoff. After back to back nights of deals breaking post midnight (Vegas time) Davidoff, Dan Graziano of the Star Ledger, and Sweeny Murti of WFAN ran into AJ Burnett’s agent Darek Braunecker. In an effort to get some sleep the trio asked Braunecker if it was “safe” to go to sleep that night. Davidoff said that Braunecker “laughed and said, ‘Yes, you can go to sleep.’ So we needed an agent’s permission to go to sleep.”
I don’t think there is quite an event like the baseball winter meetings. No other sport can put on an event in the offseason that creates a stir over player movement. Think about it; baseball is the only sport without games being played yet, here in New York, it dominated the back pages throughout the week. Regardless of the economy I see no downturn in fan interest. That bodes well for the sport since many will spend, whatever disposable income they still have, to watch the local teams.

People need to learn to live within their means. You can watch free baseball on tv, why pay to go to the game if you just lost your job. Too much consumption in this country and not enough production.
