Your New Yankee Centerfielder: Mike Cameron

By Phil Allard ~ December 11th, 2008. Filed under: Phil Allard.

The pillage and plunder of the Brewers continues unabated. The Daily News Reports that the Yanks will be sending Melky Cabrera to Milwaukee for Mike Cameron. Mark Feinsand just broke the news and it’s been confirmed on ESPN’s Mike and Mike show. Feinsand writes:

“The Yankees have found their center fielder for 2009, as they are set to send Melky Cabrera to Milwaukee for veteran outfielder Mike Cameron on Thursday, according to two major league sources.”

This is an excellent move for the Yanks, especially if it stays a straight-up trade. Cameron is an upgrade over Melky, who did not hit a single line drive for more than two months last summer.

Cameron keeps the spot warm for one year, until Austin Jackson is ready to take over in 2010. As Frank Russo reported here, this move was anticipated once CC chose the Yanks. He and Mike became fast friends in Milwaukee and Cameron fills a huge need for the Yanks.

Robby Cano, of course, is now without his best pal…but it’s time for him to grow up anyway.

Keep em’ coming, Cash…this was a steal.

Last three years OPS +
Cameron: 121, 103, 110
Melky: 95, 89, 68

  1. Pete

Cameron wasn’t good enough to play RF for the Mets!
The guy can’t hit. At least Melky had upside.
    Cashman is no Omar.
