Manny on Mets Radar?

By Mike Silva ~ November 30th, 2008. Filed under: Mike Silva.

Despite his free agent status, Manny Ramirez’s name hasn’t been linked to the Mets yet this off season. That changed today as John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectus believes the “The Mets could soon become suitors for Manny Ramirez”.

I said earlier this off season that Manny would be the perfect fit for the Mets. His offensive impact is obvious, but his attitude, which was unwelcome in Boston, might be exactly what this team needs. Manny is so oblivious to what is going on around him that you never have to worry about a “September Swoon” with him. His presence in the lineup will immediately take the pressure off of David Wright. In the locker room it would become “all about Manny”, something that this team may welcome.

If it’s a three year deal I see no harm. You will have to live with his fielding miscues, but his bat will make you forget the outfield flops.

Sign K-Rod, Oliver Perez, and Manny and make the rest of your off season roster fillers.

Manny or not, this team isn’t going to win without good pitching.

Your prescription of only obtaining closer for the pen, and the rest fillers, isn’t going to get it done. Nor is spending a fortune on Ollie which makes no sense after spending fortune on closer and Manny. Ollie isn’t worth Boras asking prices. Do you realize how much payroll you’re advocating adding while still barely addressing the pen? The Mets aren’t going to add upwards of 50 mil for three players, two of whom have questions of mental makeup in their own unique ways….Ollie, flaky, and Manny – one never knows which Manny will show up to the park.

    JustAFan,

In regards to the bullpen, if the Mets pick up K-Rod or Fuentes and Huston Street, and grab an Eduardo Morlan in the Rule V, you’re not looking at a bad pen at all .. Give me one starting pitcher, Ollie or Lowe or Randy Wolf or something and your rotation is fine. The rotation wasn’t the Mets issue last year. It was the unclutchness(if that’s a word) of the offense late in the season, and the horrid pitching performance of the pen because of people being out of their roles. Manny makes this team immensely better, and if you can I think it’s hard to say no. As far as starting pitching goes, I think Randy Wolf can give you what Oliver Perez did in 2008, and I think even Jon Niese or some guy off the non-tender list can give you what Pedro did.

The Mets scored 799 runs last season, the 2nd most in the NL. Their starting rotation was fine. If you want to list the Mets problems in 2008 it would be like this:

    1. BULLPEN

    2. lack of clutch hitting the last week of the season
    3. rotation

Lack of clutch hitting was NOT their biggest problem at all last year. Last time I checked, the season is 162 games, and hitters do not show the ability to hit well or poorly in the “clutch” over the long term. It’s random and fluctuates year to year. If you disagree, I’m interested to see the numbers to back it up.

Manny is the worst LF in baseball, defensively, over the last 4 seasons.
