Tatis Story Comes Full Circle

Kevin Kernan of the NY Post catches up with Fernando Tatis this morning. On a week that many gave thanks while eating their turkey, Tatis was thankful for finally opening up his church in San Pedro de Macoris.

This church was the motivation behind Tatis attempting another comeback. I remember discussing in May with Howard Megdal, on the Sunday show, how the carefree, fearless, and appreciative approach by Tatis was something that could help the Mets. Tatis knowing that second chances were rare, was going to make the most out of it.

As I mentioned in the “Tatis Story Ends Too Soon” article, it was a shame his season ended early due to the shoulder separation. His home run against the Phillies, in the rain, saved the Mets season. He was instrumental during the 10 win winning streak. All throughout the year, just went you were ready to write him off, he would go out and hit two homers (like he did in August against the Padres).

Tatis finally has his church, so the story comes full circle. Or does it? It seems the 34 year old has plans on another run at the World Series.

“That’s our goal,” he said. “All we are putting in our mind is to win games. That’s what we are going to focus on this year. We are not going to worry about what the newspapers are saying. We are not going to worry about anything. We’re only going to worry about each other and help each other. We are going to make a stronger team mentally and physically. We have to show we can play this game.”

No truer words could be said to describe the problem, and solution of the New York Mets. He certainly isn’t Manny Ramirez. On his best day he probably isn’t Jermaine Dye or Raul Ibanez, but Fernando Tatis might have something that this team could use quite a bit more of: leadership.
