Report: Yankees Targeting Royals Greinke

By Frank Russo ~ November 26th, 2008. Filed under: Frank Russo Rants and Raves.
Our sources down in Tampa have informed us that the Yanks have contacted the Royals about the availability of starting pitcher Zack Greinke. New York has long had interest in Greinke, despite the emotional problems that put his baseball career on hold three seasons ago. Our source told us, and we quote: “He has filthy stuff, is young, and knows how to pitch. It’s just a question if he has the mental makeup to pitch in New York, which they think he does.” Greinke, incidentally, is the older brother of Yankees prospect Luke Greinke, a 2008 draft pick who pitched for Staten Island last season.

Why would the Royals ever consider trading a 25 year old pitcher who went 13-10, with a 3.47 ERA, almost a run better than the league average? Greinke, who’s salary was $1,400,000 last season is eligible for arbitration, and the Royals fear that they might have to shovel out big bucks, not just for next year, but the next few seasons. So what would it take for the Yankees to get him? Most likely a combination of at least two high end prospects and someone off the major league roster. Stay tuned!
