Yanks Free Agent Picture Becoming Murky

Last week on the Digest Hot Stove, I mentioned to both Joe Demayo and Frank Russo that I believed CC Sabathia would give West Coast teams every attempt to match the Yankees offer. Just two hours ago, the New York Post reports that Anaheim, unwilling to go 10 years for Teixeira, are in discussions with CC on a proposal that matches the Yankees. Additionally, the competition for AJ Burnett is heating up with the Orioles, Yankees, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Phillies and Braves in the mix.

I still think Burnett winds up with the Yankees but, in my opinion, it may take 5 years and close to $100 million to secure that deal. Is it possible the Yanks lose out on all three big free agents? Could Oliver Perez wind up being the target? It’s too early to make that statement, but long gone are the days when pinstripes and big money equaled an automatic signing. The Yankees are going to have to sell why Sabathia, or any other free agent, should spurn lower taxes, better weather, and less pressure for contracts that may be minimally more dollar-wise. Stay tuned.
