Mike Francesa vs. The Mets

By Mike Silva ~ October 16th, 2008. Filed under: Sports Media Commentary.

First Mad Dog, then Craig Carton, now Mike Francesa has declared war on the New York Mets. If you missed today’s show Mike basically threw down the gauntlet against the team in Flushing. I am really not sure why Mike has it out for this team. Maybe it’s because the Yankees didn’t’ make the playoffs. Whatever the issue may be its clear that Mike wants you to understand the following:

1. The Mets need to break up their core. Preferably trading David Wright.

2. They have no chance for a title in 2009.

3. The Mets only get a big name player if the Yankees let them.

4. David Wright is a “Dime a Dozen” player

5. The Bullpen woes is an excuse to feel better about the Mets collapse

Give Evan Roberts credit, he did a great job making his points and using facts as the foundation of his analysis. Francesa doesn’t deal with facts. He lives in his world of “Francesa-isms”. You see in Mike’s world the Mets are only fun when the Yankees have things locked up. The Mets “core” is a threat to his beloved A-Rod, Jeter, and Posada. If Wright and Reyes stick around long enough they might be the best offensive players in New York. This is unacceptable in a Francesa world where pinstripes are entitled to wins and championships. Today was classic Francesa as he threw facts and analysis to the curb and said “The Yankees will get Texeira and Sabathia because 98% of the time when they want a player they get him”. If someone can chart this for me could you post it in the comments?

Now that Francesa revealed a rift between between him and David Wright can you take the above quotes seriously? Do you trust the thoughts of a man that couldn’t defend himself against a “wet behind the ears” Evan Roberts? Could you imagine Francesa debating these issues with Howard Megdal or me? No offense, we would have wiped the floor with him. And that is 100% fact.

This winter I have a question for you to ponder. Where will you get your baseball analysyis? Will you go to WFAN and Mike Francesa? Or will you listen to the group of contributers at NY Baseball Digest? You believe an “over the hill” radio host or a site that provides analysis from the work of two authors, a former college baseball player, and a baseball historian? If you had any question before today does today’s performance impact your vote?

While you ponder McCain vs. Obama during your morning coffee add Francesa vs. NY Baseball Digest to that ballot. I promise you that kind of pompous, inaccurate, and immature analysis will never be a part of our program. Heck, if we have to, I will ask 7-11 to make coffee cups with our names on it to measure the vote.

When I first heard King Mike spew his venom on the Mets my first thought was is it was a joke to bait young Evan but when it got to the point where Francesa said that “every team had a David Wright” that’s when I knew yesterday was the day the music died so to speak at WFAN.

While it does seem personal with Wright, I think Francesca is just making sure his ratings stay high now that Doggie’s gone. He’s going for the tune in to hate him crowd, funny thing is he risks a backlash. It is sad statement in a baseball town on the Mets station they havent had a Mets fan personality during drive time for this long…..

He went on to say the Mets don’t have a high success rate ..

I tried calling in never got through, I was planning to own him.

Since Omar Minaya took over, there has only been two free agents that he’s 100% targeted and failed on, those two were Carlos Delgado and Barry Zito ..

He got Delgado a year later, his success rate looks good to me.

who cares what mike says about the mets. why take anything of what he says personally? just go listen to chris on satellite. its better and at least he is funny. mike is terrible without chris.

Mets Never targeted Zito – and I know first hand there was a major player in the decision making process who didn’t think he was a NY guy ( might be the only inside tip I ever got and it was on a bar stool)

Imagine the writer of this article and his surprise when the Yankees signed both Sabathia and Tex.

“The Yankees will get Texeira and Sabathia because 98% of the time when they want a player they get him”. If someone can chart this for me could you post it in the comments?

    DONE.

It’s well known by the way that Beltran wanted to go to the Yankees for less money.

Looks like he was dead on.

So what? Things have a way of changing and being cyclical in the long run…this too shall pass…
