Use Mitre or Gaudin to Keep Hoffmann

It seems the Yankees will look to get something from Sergio Mitre or Chad Gaudin this spring. Rumors are abound the Arizona Diamondbacks would be interested in one for their rotation.

Right now Jamie Hoffmann has not been lighting the world on fire this spring. Although Marcus Thames and Randy Winn haven’t either, they have a benchmark of big league success, which Hoffmann doesn’t. The best place for Hoffmann would be as AAA depth. The problem is, as a Rule V pick, the Yankees have to keep him on the big league roster or offer him back to Los Angeles. Unless the Dodgers are hard up for the 50k (maybe it’s in the McCourt’s divorce proceedings) I see no reason why they wouldn’t take Hoffmann back.

Los Angeles could use some pitching depth so why not use Mitre or Gaudin as part of a deal for Hoffmann’s rights?

Which one would the Dodgers want? Mitre has been impressive this spring (3.21 ERA, strikeout per inning), but I have always heard how much the Yankees like Gaudin. It all depends on which would be better suited to the bullpen role.

Something just to think about. Why get nothing in a deal for the pitching depth and lose Hoffmann? I believe it makes more sense to trade one of them and keep Hoffmann in the organization.
