More on Hyperthyroidism

By Dr. Mark Filippi ~ March 5th, 2010. Filed under: Mike Silva.

Just to elaborate on Mike Silva’s point, the whole Reyes/thyroid testing thing got the usual spin from all sides today. I heard armchair doctors on WFAN giving metabolism tutorials. Mets brass issued the standard ‘precautionary’ press releases and the player himself just tried to make the distinction between injuries and a potential illness. Let me try to unravel this a bit.

What people often do with any kind of unusual lab finding is jump to extreme conclusions. Either this is the tip of the HGH iceberg or he’s facing some new mystery ailment. Mike is right.
We’re not talking about the Mets’ all-star shortstop here. This is Jose Reyes; human being. If we’ve learned nothing from the lives of these shooting stars it’s how flawed they all are. Well, except for Jeter, but that’s another topic. My point is, unless you’ve been knee to knee with a performer in any field, and I have, they carry a lot of burdens that go unseen by the world.

So sometimes the stress they hide is the biggest factor in how long they stay in the show.

But is there a link between HGH and hyperthyroidism?
This is a chicken and egg question actually. When you have the condition and it’s undetected, taking HGH is a dangerous move because it’ll jack up the thyroid even more and then you get into some nasty waters. But if you KNOW you have hyperthyroidism and a doctor manages your HGH regulation you can get an indirect correction of the condition since HGH works to systemically balance your entire endocrine system. So it’s like driving north to go south in a way. I’m sure since MLB has no test for it that they are in 24/7 mode to find metabolic footprints of its use, just like they got Manny on  PED’s without isolating the actual steroid but it’s residual biochemistry.
