Audio of the Day: Carl Everett

One of the more mercurial players to come through this town was Carl Everett. Originally drafted by the Yankees in the first round of the 1990 draft, he was selected by the expansion Marlins two years later. Never fully living up to his potential, the Mets acquired him in 1994 for second baseman Quilvio Veras.

Everett would have a productive 1997 season for the Mets, putting the team in a position to win the Wild Card with a hot summer, but off the field controversy force GM Steve Phillips to send him to Houston after the season.

It was with the Astros that Everett finally put it together and had the best run of his career average 20 homers, 92 RBI, and an OPS over .900. He would wear out his welcome, however, and was sent to Boston for prospect Adam Everett. Yankees fans will always remember Everett coming off the bench and breaking up Mike Mussina’s perfect game in 2001.

Although he won a title with Chicago in 2005, Everett always has been better known for his prickly relationship with the media, wild comments, and on field blow ups.

The last few years he has played in the independent Atlantic League for the Long Island Ducks and Newark Bears. Although his career appears over, Everett has put up great numbers in independent ball, and endeared himself to those around him. I had a chance to catch up with Carl before a game in May of 2007. We talked about his time in New York, his thoughts on baseball, and the story behind breaking up Mussina’s perfect game.
