Mike Silva Chronicles at “Inside the Book” Part 2

By Mike Silva ~ December 30th, 2009. Filed under: Mike Silva.

Tom Tango answered Part 2 of my questions at Inside the Book. I once again want to thank Tom for engaging in what turned out to be a productive discourse. In the end, debate, opinion, and discourse is what baseball is all about. I have learned quite a bit from the last few days and from Tom’s answers. I believe the best analysis comes from a balanced view of the game from all angles, and that is my ultimate goal. If you missed Part 1 check it out here. Look forward to having more debate and discussion on this topic.

6. The advanced metric community seems to take offense when I suggest the ultimate goal is to mainstream their theories and perhaps gain more power in the baseball community. From what I understand I am not the first to have this question. No one has ever challenged the math, but the “value” of how these metrics can be used seems to be marginal in my opinion.

7. Why is there the appearance of “hesitation” (April of ‘09 SI article seemed to indicate that) with embracing advanced metrics? Would it be fair to say the community has done a bad job selling their ideas?

8. There seems to be a sense of “righteousness” when it comes to people who use advanced metrics to make decisions on the Hall of Fame and awards. Do you share that sentiment? Can you see where someone uses standard thinking (such as Wins and postseason achievements with Morris HOF candidacy) has their own logic as much as an individual who used WAR to make a case for Blyleven?

9. Do you think advanced metrics real value is creating better fantasy game products.  I personally think it would be the best way to monetize the industry on a higher level.

10. Where do you see advanced metrics in 10 years? Fad? Major part of a front office operation? Replace traditional scouting?
