Francesa: Mets Sign Jason Bay

Mike Francesa just reported on WFAN the Mets have signed Jason Bay pending a physical this weekend. He also said Bengie Molina is holding to his three year contract demands.
I find this strange that Francesa has this type of confidence and Ken Rosenthal, Jon Heyman, or another writer didn’t have it first.
Also to note, Matt Cerrone reported that people close to Bay say the outfielder is prepared to sign a 4 year deal with an average annual value around $16.5 million.
If this is true the Mets got the bat they needed at a reasonable price, especially if they didn’t have to go for a fifth year.
Update: Joel Sherman of the NY Post does not think the physical is a formality, hence why the Mets are not confirming the report.
It is also believed the fifth year vesting option brings the total value of the deal to 5 years/$80 million.

This is great news, but like the one or two big signings each year for the past five years, this is far from a championship team. Take lessons from the ’86 team: need to be deep in every position and fill all the pieces in the puzzle to make it work. Just gathering a bunch of four or five stars and “hope for the best” at the rest of the positions, plus one pitching ace and “gather a mass of arms and pray” will not work..Yes, everyone at full strength will be great, but even at full strength this team is not as good as the 2006 team, and they probably were not good enough or tough enough to beat the Phillies as they are today. Just as all roads led through Atlanta in the old days, all roads lead through Philly now and the Mets should be thinkning about that road if they’re serious..
