Listen: Former Mets GM Al Harazin
By Mike Silva ~ December 24th, 2009. Filed under: Mets Alumni, Mets Audio.
Some have compared the situation the Mets are in this winter to the offseason of 1991. That year, Mets GM Al Harazin inherited a team that won only 77 games. This was after a seven year run that yielded an average of 95 wins, two division titles, and a championship. Harazin vaulted the Mets into a new era by signing Bobby Bonilla and Eddie Murray, trading for Bret Saberhagen, and bringing White Sox manager Jeff Torborg on board. The result was disastrous as the Mets would be called “The Worst Team Money Could Buy” in a book co- written by Bob Klapisch and John Harper.
Last night the former Mets GM joined me for a few minutes to talk about his experience with that team. He explained his reason for the offseason spending spree, what transaction was the toughest to execute, and why months later he traded David Cone for Jeff Kent and Ryan Thompson. Today Harazin is a professor of history and political science at Holyoke Community College.
