Audio of the Day: Danny Heep

By Mike Silva ~ December 23rd, 2009. Filed under: Audio of the Day, Mets Alumni, Mets Audio.

Danny Heep is best remembered as being the first ever Designated Hitter in Mets history during the 1986 World Series. His career struggles against left handed pitching prevented him from playing everyday, but he did have one of his best seasons of his career in 1986. Ironically Danny was traded to the Mets in 1983 for future nemesis Mike Scott.

Today he is the head baseball coach of the University of Incarnate Word. During his stint his teams have won two division championships and historically have been solid offensive teams.

In June of 2007 he joined me during a show on 1240 AM WGBB. We talked about his role as part of the “scum bunch”, the wild July 4th, 1985 game against Atlanta, and the difference between winning the championship in New York and Los Angeles. I also got Danny’s perspective on hitting and his method of teaching.
