Mets Extend Deadline for Season Ticket Holders
By Matt Pignataro ~ December 23rd, 2009. Filed under: Digest Contributors.
The Mets have extended the deadline for season ticket holders to renew their tickets for next season.
According to Steve Sidoti of SevenTraintoShea.com, the deadline has been extended to the 31st of this month. The deadline was originally December 4th just prior to the Winter Meetings.
I know season ticket holders such as Steve, still have yet to decide whether or not to renew their tickets. Season tickets holders are in a tough position. I think the majority of them are basing their decision on whether or not to renew on what moves the Mets have made to improve the team. Obviously, no high impact moves have been made as of yet.
Mike Francesa of WFAN, said the best way for fans to send a message to the Mets is by not renewing their season tickets. This does make sense. The Mets will panic, since they will be losing income/fans, which I think will either for force them to a) lower ticket prices or b) put a better product on the field.

I am not renewing becasue Omar Minaya is still the GM and he has convinced me he is incompetent. I sent a hard-copy letter to the Mets with my renewal form and then the following email as a reply to their note to me expaling that the deadline had been extended.
I have been a Mets fan since 1964 and I have had various plans — Saturday, 8-Pack, 6-Pack, etc. — for over 10 years. Between home games and road games, I generally attend between 30 and 50 Mets games a season and have done so for years. I am done paying my hard earned money for the product you have elected to put on the field and for the leadership you have employed to guide this team. You can consider me a die-hard, loyal-to-a-fault, angry and disgruntled Mets fan.
Omar Minaya is an embarrassment to the Mets organization and ownership is guilty of poor judgement. How could ownership extend a GM who assembled a team that collapsed in both 2007 and 2008 and then delivered the product we endured in 2009? The 2009 season was a disgrace and in my opinion — even without the injuries — this was a .500 team at best …. injuries may be a convenient excuse for you but the team as constructed by Minaya was awful. Daniel Murphy as the staring LF’er? Brian Schneider?? Ryan Church?? That pitching staff after Johan — $12M a year for Oliver Perez, $6M a year for Luis Castillo ….. I saw more dropped flyballs by Mets players in 2009 then I saw in my entire life prior to 2009 …. I got to witness two walk-off grand slam home runs in person (yes, I was in San Diego in August for that disaster).
Then, as if the horrid play on the field wasn’t bad enough, allowing Tony Bernazard to run amuck and embarrass the organization was sickening …. for management to take so long to act on it was appalling and then even worse yet was disparaging Adam Rubin in the process. I truly love the Mets but have no confidence or respect in those leading this organization. And that’s when I made my decision not to renew — after Omar made every Met employee and every Met fan look like fools with his rambling announcement at the press conference and his subsequent non-apology apology where he stood by his comments.
Now, with the same inept GM in place and no moves made to improve the team for 2010 aside from resigning Alex Cora (at $2M with an option), Chris Coste (who will always be a Phillie at heart), Elmer Dessens (why? someone please tell me why?) and an unknown Japanese pitcher who has been anointed the “bridge to KROD” without ever throwing a major league pitch, you have the testicular fortitude to ask me to pay another $1061.00 for tickets to this horror show for 2010? You have got to be kidding. And, by the way, last year I paid $1075 … this year you are asking for $1061 …. tell Dave Howard that reducing from $1075 to $1061 is not a 10% reduction.
Citi Field is beautiful, but my seats were awful …. and that is being extremely kind. Promenade Box — Section 432 — First Row …. no view of left field and minimal view of CF. Take a look at the view from my seats yourselves — I attached photos I took from my seats. Whoever decided to place those ridiculous “ribbon boards” at a height that blocks the view of the field should be fired. If it was part of the original architectural design, then the architect should lose their license. Great move, by the way, to install a giant TV in RF on the bridge to the Pepsi Porch so the people in the obstructed LF seats could actually see what was going on in the stadium that they were sitting in — thanks for the tip …. that’s exactly how I will watch the games from now on — on the TV in my family room.
I love the Mets and will miss attending the games in person — I could not put a value on the quality time I spent with my son over the last decade and will cherish the memories I have …. but until this organization does something right, I am done as a plan holder. Please don’t embarrass yourself or insult me any further by actually asking me to pay money for this without improving the product you put on the field.
I am enclosing pictures taken from my 2009 seats ….. in the letter I sent back cancelling my plan I also enclosed three pair of tickets that I could not give away from last September/October…. aside from the money I threw away on the games I actually attended, you ripped me off for another $168 in unusable tickets …. don’t even attempt to solicit another penny out of me.
Omar Minaya or Jeff Wilpon can call me at any time if they would like a real Mets fan’s perspective.

Ron
I completely understand where you are coming from. I think the moves you mentioned look worse because they haven’t signed an impact player. If Bay or Holliday, and a pitcher, were in the fold you wouldn’t care about those moves.
I will wait to pass judgement until the final roster is in place. I can’t blame you for sending a message to the Mets – they need more of those responses to get with it.

Mike, thanks.
I have lived thru many down periods with this team …. 77-83 was particularly hard …. 1992-96 were not a lot of fun either …. but there is someting different this time and I blame Minaya …. net-net, I will always love the Mets and be a loyal Mets fan but they need to earn my entertainment dollar back …. I will not spend another penny on them until ownership takes some action.
Happy Holidays!
