Yanks Can Trump Early Halladay Offers
By Mike Silva ~ December 10th, 2009. Filed under: Offseason Speculation.
At least there is some tangible information about Roy Halladay finally in the news. For weeks we have speculated on packages that Toronto GM Alex Anthopoulos would request from would-be suitors. Anaheim appears to have offered Joe Saunders, Erick Aybar, and Peter Bourjos and the Phillies J.A. Happ, plus either Michael Taylor or Domonic Brown.
I see two equivalent packages that are equally as good, and in my opinion, better than either. To match the Anaheim offer the Yanks could package Joba/Hughes, Ramiro Pena, and a lower prospect like Brandon Laird. The richer, more competitive deal is from the Phillies that would probably require Jesus Montero along with Joba Chamberlain or Phil Hughes.
I don’t see Toronto jumping at either the Phillies or Angels offer, but at least Anthopoulos finally has concrete names to use as a base. I really believe Halladay will wind up in pinstripes if the Yankees truly want him. Although Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain haven’t accomplished what J.A Happ and Joe Saunders have in the starting rotation, their ceiling certainly is higher. Neither Happ nor Saunders profiles as a potential #1 starter in my opinion. As for the Mets, they could actually get into the fray and make a competitive offer. I see an equivalent as Ike Davis/Mike Pelfrey or Pelfrey, Ruben Tejada, and Fernando Martinez. The problem is if Philadelphia has the willingness to deal their young player the Mets can’t match the quality of a Brown or Taylor.
Right now, if I were the Toronto GM, I personally would be attracted to the Phillies offer of Happ and either Brown or Taylor. If they add Cole Hamels to the mix than I am unsure the Yankees can even match, but that is all speculation as this point. I have always said I don’t believe Brian Cashman will trade his prospects. With the Red Sox also seemingly on the outside, due to their unwillingness to deal Clay Buchholz and Casey Kelly, it very well could mean the “NL East Armageddon” I spoke about this week could be close to becoming a reality.
