Pedro in Pinstripes?
By Mike Silva ~ December 6th, 2009. Filed under: Offseason Speculation.
Christian Red of the NY Daily News catches up with Robinson Cano who believes Yankees nemesis Pedro Martinez would look good in pinstripes. Cano believes that Martinez would be a perfect fit for the Yanks who score runs and don’t need a pitcher to go more than 5 or 6 innings. Uh, Robbie, don’t you have two young arms in Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain that could do just that? Maybe they slipped Cano’s mind.
It also appeared the relationship between Martinez and the Mets is over as he offered a “no comment” when asked about possibly coming back to pitch for his former club.
Last summer it would have made sense to sign Pedro for the fifth spot in the rotation when the alternatives were Chad Gaudin and Sergio Mitre. Now I would go after Roy Halladay or John Lackey. I would take a risk on a high reward pitcher (see Rich Harden, Erik Bedard, Ben Sheets) before Pedro.
Nothing against Martinez but it would be criminal to hold back Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes for him. Great baseball story with the villain coming to the Bronx (watch the phony Yankees fans cheer him like they did Clemens), but not even a feasible option in my opinion. Hopefully Cano doesn’t have any ambitions of running his own team after his playing career is over. I see the guys over at Pinstriped Alley agree with me.
