“Met Killer” Pat Burrell a Met?

By Matt Pignataro ~ December 5th, 2009. Filed under: Rumor Mill.

According to Joel Sherman of the NY Post, “I hear that a trade of Rays OF Pat Burrell for Cubs OF Milton Bradley is still a strong possibility.”

An interesting rumor from a NL executive speculating a three team deal that would send Pat Burell to the Mets, Luis Castillo to the Cubs, and Milton Bradley to the Rays.

Burrell, 33, hit .221 with 14 HR, 64 RBI in 122 games with the Rays last season, after signing a two-year, $16 million deal.

Can’t say I don’t like this rumored idea of the Mets getting rid of Luis Castillo and acquiring “Met Killer” Pat Burrell.

But if the Mets do get him in this rumored deal…where does he fit into their 2010 plans?

I don’t think anyone wants to see Burrell’s horrible defense out in left field with Matt Holliday being the Mets clear cut choice. First base wouldn’t sound like a bad idea. He could platoon with Daniel Murphy. He’s played there before when he first came up with the Phillies. He’s hit left handed pitching well in his career, minus last season. Plus, with a year left on his contract, he wouldn’t be a road block to Ike Davis.

Burrell would be awful. Between he and Wright, they would approach, if not eclipse, 300 strikeouts. This team strikesout too much, and Burrell showed last year his power numbers are diminishing. How will that equate to Citi Field? We already landed one ex-Phillie (Coste) do we really need another? I emphatically NO!

Strikeouts are overrated, especially with players who walk nearly 80+ times a year like Wright (79 BB average per season) and Burrell (96 BB average per season).

I’d be alright with Burrell at 1B I guess, but NOT in LF, please.

Burrell is too streaky, is probably a DH at this point in his career, and a terrible teammate. Nothing to like, look and move on!

I wouldn’t mind Burrell. You are going to have to take something “bad” back for Castillo. If they get Burrell and move him over for to first, it would open the door for them to sign Hudson at second and Holliday in left.
