Olney: Yanks to Cut Payroll
By Mike Silva ~ December 4th, 2009. Filed under: Rumor Mill.
ESPN’s Buster Olney just “tweeted” the following:
Yankees finished org. meetings — they’re cutting payroll. I’m not sure yet by how much, but during season, expectation was to $185 mill.
That doesn’t sound like we will see Holliday, Halladay, Jason Bay, or John Lackey.
There has been speculation the Yankees will try to bring back two of three from the group of Damon, Matsui, and Pettitte- with Damon and Pettitte the preferred candidates.
If true, this changes the landscape and certainly helps other teams (see Mets and Red Sox) make plays for the aforementioned stars.
I still think if one of the big free agents market comes down the Yankees will swoop in late. I can see that being likely with Lackey and perhaps Jason Bay.
Another thought to ponder. It bodes well for some of the young kids (Kevin Russo, Ramiro Pena, Austin Jackson, and Mark Melancon) because the team may have them fill holes that in the past would be reserved for veterans.
