Mets Interested in Saito- I Prefer Calero

Patrick Newman of NPB Tracker relays a report saying Takashi Saito has eight teams interested, including the White Sox, Cubs, Braves and Mets.
Saito is an interesting pick up provided he is low risk and signed to a heavy incentive deal. His strikeout rate has dropped by a third since his rookie year of 2006 and going into his age 40 season probably only has a little left. I view him as a risky signing.
I like Ed from Mets Fever idea about going after Kiko Calero. Bringing in a couple of right handed arms, along with a second lefty, on one year deals is how I would go about upgrading the bullpen. Remember, you still have Parnell, Feliciano, Green, and K-Rod. Because I view Green/Feliciano as situational I would prefer one lefty and one righty who can cross over. Calero has peripherals that are more on the upswing than Saito and solid splits on both sides of the plate.

Even if the Mets sign Calero, I bet they finish behind both Florida teams (you know, the ones who ‘don’t deserve baseball’?).

AK thanks for being a Met fan!

Saito makes perfect sense for the Mets. He’s 40 and injury prone. 2 years, $12 million should get him. Next up: Eric Gagne!

Green unless he’s lights out in ST he shouldn’t even be on the team. I hope they use him as a throw in in a deal. I ouldn’t be upsetif he as cut loose.

I spoke to Chris Carlin on WFAN about Kiko Calero and Shawn Chacon 2 years ago. Chris was not to high on Calero then and I argued that he was wrong about Kiko. He’s was a solid RP for STL and OAK until he got hurt. Then he had a tremendous season last year. He’d be a great signing.

Kiko Calero may be an interesting target. The bullpen, however, needs anothr lefty, which should be there first target in that area. After that, Calero might be an interesting addition.

You do have Roy Merritt and, if he is brought back, Adam Bostick.
Brian Shouse is a FA and I wouldn’t mind them signing him on a cheap one year deal.
