Two Days Rest?

Another bit of evidence how baseball has changed in 40 years was revealed in an MLB Network broadcast last week.

The channel aired Game 7 of the 1965 World Series between the Minnesota Twins and Los Angeles Dodgers featuring the late Ray Scott as the Twins voice and, naturally, Vin Scully as the voice of the Dodgers as part of what was an NBC production.

The debate was how good Dodgers pitcher Sandy Koufax would be on two-days rest, even though he had pitched like that earlier in the season.  Koufax threw 335.2 innings in 1965, going 26-8, 2.04, with 382 strikeouts – one less than Nolan Ryan’s record 383 in 1973 – and just 71 walks.

Koufax, who pitched a complete-game shutout, would retire after the 1966 season, in which he went 27-9, 1.73, due to arthritis.
