Small Halladay Opening for Mets

By Mike Silva ~ November 24th, 2009. Filed under: Offseason Speculation.

There are so many different reports this offseason that it’s very hard to differentiate from what is fact, fiction, or posturing.

Just a few days after it was reported the Dodgers were interested in Toronto ace Roy Halladay GM Ned Colletti threw cold water on the idea. You have to think if the Dodgers, Yankees, and Red Sox want Halladay their top pitching prospect must be the center of any deal. That is, and I am only speculating here, if Vernon Wells contract isn’t part of the deal. Then I would imagine Toronto GM Alex Anthopoulos would have to scale back his player demands due to the financial savings. What if the aforementioned decided that Billingsley, Chamberlain, Hughes, or Buchholz wasn’t worth the price for Halladay? Could we see a “Johan Santana redux” and watch Omar Minaya swoop in and land the big fish? Isn’t a package of Mejia, Fernando Martinez, and Ruben Tejada better than just draft picks?

Mets fans can dream about a Santana/Halladay tandem at Citi Field. It probably won’t happen, but the more posturing the so called “favorites” do the more likely a Mets package could get a deal done. This strategy worked with Bill Smith and Minnesota and it’s certainly not out of the question that it could happen again. Remember, it’s not going to be easy to give up a prized prospect if you are the Yankees or Red Sox. They wouldn’t do it for Santana and he had a ton less mileage than Holliday.

Don’t hold your breath on the Mets getting Roy Halladay, but something tells me you shouldn’t completely stop dreaming either.

What’s more likely you think? Holliday or Halladay. I’d have to say the later. They just don’t seem to be willing to spend money.

Steve, you don’t think Halladay would cost just as much? They’d have to sign him to an extension in the same territory as Santana.

  3. Steve G

Well yes, but they won’t necessarily have to worry about that until after this season.

If you read this article close enough you might think that Holliday and Halladay were the same player!

My predictions for what the Mets do in the offseason:

    1) Resign Delgado to a incentive laden one year deal

    2) Somehow get rid of Castillo and sign Orlando Hudson

    3) Sign Bengi Molina

    4) Sign a middle of the road starter- Jason Marquis or Randy Wolf

And to tell you the truth, I think they’ll be satisfied and confident with that.

    Dont worry

Im sure met fans r gonna love the bottom feeding this off season. piniero, marquis, dye, byrd

got a solid 80 wins all over it

I am ok with that if they trade for Carl Crawford or sign Matt Holliday. If not, they are still a bat short IMO.

Agree with Steve G – the Mets are a mess. Either go all out and sign the appropriate people to win this year, or plan for the long haul. Dont half-ass it with Benjie Molina and Delgado. How are they going to help you? If they’re not going to pony up the big bucks now, tell the fans that they’re going to hunker down and be patient while they develop the stars of the future. Will they lose some money in tickets? Tough, consider it in investment in the future.

Time to dismantle this team and build for the future.

I think the mets do everything Steve G said, but also sign someone to play left field. also, i would rather the mets trade castillo and a young guy to the reds for arroyo and philips than sign hudson. The reds are looking to drop payroll and i think this deal could be great for the mets.
If the mets do trade for Halladay they would have to sign him to an extension THIS YEAR not after this year. otherwise he will not wave his no trade clause.
One more think, shamik makes it sound as though the mets dont feel like winning next year. If their not going to pny up the big bucks? dont you think they would if they could? are you saying you think the mets are sitting around with plenty of money but they dont feel like spending enough to win this year? this doesnt make any sence to me. I believe the mets will do what they can with the money they have.

Roy Halladay is a must!!! For 4 reasons..
1 being that we will have the best 1-2 punch in baseball and it will instantly RESTORE our respectablity.
    2. He is a work horse a complete games pitcher who goes deep into games and will help our bullpen.
    3. Halladay will give us 2 Great years and some good years. He seems to be in the class of Randy Johnson Tom Glavine Roger Clemens type pitching WELL in their late 30′s early 40′s.
    4. Our number 1 consern this offseason PITCHING!! We need a REAL # 2 starter NOT MIKE PELFREY.. and a solid #3 starter also an innings eater type guy….Jason Marquis.
    5. Yankees wont have Halladay which gives THE WHOLE LEAGUE AT LEAST A SHOT AT WINNING A CHAMPIONSHIP. YANKEES GET HALLADAY AND ITS NUMBER 28 FOR THEM.

I think Pelfrey/Murphy/Parnell/Tejada/FMART gets the deal done.

Murphy is a dh/1b with no speed, no power, he would make a great 2b but he isnt agile or versitile. Looks like he picked the wrong position to be good at.

Pelfrey is solid but you got to give to get..signin Marquis negates the loss of Pelfrey. If it were a straight up deal Pelfrey for Halladay wouldnt you do it?

Parnell seem like he would be better off NOT in the NY spotlight..He has a good arm 98-100mph and he is cheap ML ready and young Jays would love him..

    Tejada Who Knows?

FMART is mister overrated and doesnt hustle, he is also injury prone and lost some value this year. He will be a good player if healthy but more like scott gomez not Manny Ramirez.

    Plan for 2010 PITCHING!!!!
    Trade for Halladay
    Sign Marquis
Sign Delgado as a stop gap for Ike Davis…5 mil with option, incentives
Sign a solid bullpen arm maybe putz on the cheap or beimel or darrin oliver somebody jus to eat up some innings. Remember we will have Santana Halladay and Marquis all guys who pitch alot of innings THEY WILL HELP THE BULLPEN.
Leave Pagan at LF he has speed, good glove, switch hitter, SB Threat, and can really hit, exciting player with all his doubles and triples. Use Evans to give him some rest and incase he gets injured. Did I mention he is 28….A prime age for baseball players.
Omir santos can take over the catching duties believe me we dont need BENGIE MOLINA that bad. We have Josh Thole tuning his defense getting ready to be a starter for 2011.

And would everyone leave Castillo alone!! That is not our concern this offseason…He actually had a solid year…He was right in line with his career stats…thas wha you expect out of a 2b…not named Utley, Cano, Phillips or Jeff Kent. Plus no one is takin his contract off of our hands…The Mets have bigger fish to fry…Use the Prospects and Money we have WISELY to get some PITCHING.

Please stop with the Brandon Phillips Arroyo thing…that is not happening….Phillips is the Reds Star…why would they give him up….

  13. Lucas

halladay would be great for the mets but he will not sign an extension with them. theres no reason to trade prospects for one year of halladay.

And besides hes going to the phillies
