WFAN Sponsor in Hot Water

By Mike Silva ~ November 20th, 2009. Filed under: Sports Media Commentary.

You all have heard, ad nauseam, the Kars4Kids theme on WFAN. The amount of run this commercial receives has caused this site to speculate that advertising dollars are not easy to come by at the station. Today it is revealed by Mitch Lipka at Consumer Alley that Kars4Kids has been steering (no pun intended) donors in the wrong direction.

According to Lipka “All of the money raised by Joy for Our Youth (a.k.a. Kars4Kids) — $16.2 million in 2007, according to their tax returns — gets funneled to another charity called Oorah, which is never mentioned in the radio jingles or the billboards plastered along many major highways. Oorah is a Jewish religious organization whose stated mission is to heighten Jewish children’s’ awareness of their heritage.” In addition, Kars for Kids promises a vacation that really is an attempt to sell you on time share. The states of Oregon and Pennsylvania have reached settlement with Kars4Kids for the misleading advertising. Even though it appears that Kars4Kids does some good work I think it would behoove them to show complete transparency with the advertisements.

Since my WFAN listening is at minimum have you continued to hear these commercials? If so, was it made abundantly clear about where the money was going? Are they still offering the bogus vacation? I will pay attention, but if anyone has information please pass it along.

You all know I believe Program Director Mark Chernoff is a typical old school radio hack. The stifling of talent, lack of guests, and arrogant responses to criticism lead me to believe he is the proverbial emperor with no clothes- a do nothing myopic executive that takes orders and keeps the status quo. Chernoff, who played tough when Don Imus came under fire, but rarely seems to reign in bad boy Craig Carton, tends to react rather than show leadership. Remember, it was told to me that Chernoff believes WFAN.com is competition to the actual radio product. That type of thinking surely will get the company into the future.

We will be watching you closely Mr. Chernoff and see if you will address the Kars for Kids situation. Your listeners are at risk for being misled and you should be all over this. Will you pull the ads or will, just like Carton, the dollars compromise your integrity? I will be watching closely because it will tell me a lot about what you think of me, the listener, and how much respect you have for us. Something tells me you will botch this, but I will give you an opportunity to prove me wrong.

Hey Carton It is the Boomer Show

I found it hilarious while listening the other morning that Craig Carton is insulted that people are calling the morning show “The Boomer Show.” Did he actually think it’s #1 because of him? Boomer Esiason is one of the hardest working members in the media. He also does great work with his foundation. Boomer respects the guests and callers in addition to bringing knowledge when speaking about sports. All of these are traits that Carton lacks. It’s about time the man wakes up and realizes he is riding the coattails of a New York sports legend and has no real talent of his own. Maybe if he brought something to the table fans would no longer feel compelled to forget Carton’s name when referencing the show.

    Hi Mike,
I agree with your assessment of Craig Carton. He reminds me so much of former WFAN psycho, Sid Rosenberg.

I believe that Craig Carton is a good person and he even does several charities related to children. However, sometimes I feels like he lets his sports agenda get in front of making rational statements.
