Could McGwire Drive Holliday from Stl?

SI picked up a Chicago Tribune report where Scott Boras blamed offseason adjustments by Mark McGwire on Matt Holliday’s swing as the reason for the early season woes by the slugging right hander. Boras is quoted as saying that once Holliday went back to his old mechanics he was as good as ever.

I believe this means that teams are questioning Holliday’s slow start in Oakland. Remember, he has a bit of a career disparity in his Home/Road splits (1.052 vs .808 OPS). This is an obvious concern because he’s spent the majority of his career in hitter friendly Coors Field. His road splits aren’t bad (.808 OPS), but teams are going to try to pick away at the 8 years $180 million dollar price tag requested by Boras. This is probably less about McGwire and more about using McGwire as a negotiating pawn to offset any team objections.

In the end it will come down to money- you can bet on that.
