Heyman: Mets to Look Into Gonzalez & Halladay

By Mike Silva ~ November 9th, 2009. Filed under: Rumor Mill.

I have a feeling that this will be a winter of a lot of interesting hot stove talk. Just a day into the GM meetings we have heard about the Mets possibly having interest in Lyle Overbay. Also tonight Jon Heyman of SI tweeted the following earlier today:

Mets will look into Halladay, A. Gonzalez. Execs believe Roy will go somewhere.

NYBD contributor Matt Pignataro also reached out to a league source who confirmed the Mets interest in Gonzalez. There have been some conflicting reports about San Diego’s desire to trade their slugging first baseman. Former GM Kevin Towers believes it’s only a matter of time a deal will have to be executed, but current GM Jed downplayed that scenario.

I wrote earlier this season the Mets should consider mortgaging the future for Adrian Gonzalez. Although Gonzalez is a perfect fit for this team, I believe they should use the chips to trade for Halladay and sign either Matt Holliday/Jason Bay. Under that scenario they would add a top line starter and an impact bat.

I have more thoughts on Halladay that I will share in the morning.
