Those Who Contribute the Least….

You probably have heard the story before. Former Mets general manager Frank Cashen told reporters after Game 6 of the 1986 NLCS that “those who contribute the least spray the most champagne.” This was in reference to lefty Randy Niemann who was generous with the bubbly during the celebration, but only pitched 35 innings during that season.

Nearly 25 years later things haven’t changed. This was what Peter Abraham tweeted this morning:

Clubhouse was chaos. Family, children, wives, clubbies sprayed more champagne than players. Sergio Mitre (?) was a wild man.

That is the same Sergio Mitre who owned a 1.6 WHIP and 6.79 ERA in a little over 51 innings.

Yes, those who contribute the least do spray the most champagne Mr. Cashen.

Also, I asked “where was Hank Steinbrenner” earlier this morning. Abraham mentioned in another tweet that Randy Levine and Hank Steinbrenner were boasting about the victory. Now I know why Hank wasn’t given the microphone from the commissioner. As for Randy Levine – spare me. I almost take the girls with pink Yankee hats more serious than an Upper East Sider who is along for the ride.
