How About a Pedro Return?

We saw Pedro Martinez turn back the clock at Yankee Stadium last night. During my World Series preview show Phils beat reporter Scott Lauber talked about how surprised many have been about Pedro’s performance on the field and in the locker room. The Phillies are so pleased there is speculation that Martinez might be given an offer for 2010. Since Pedro is a free agent would it make sense for the Mets to consider a reunion?
Part of me stands by what I wrote in November of last year and move past Pedro Martinez for good. If Martinez asked for $5 million dollars this spring coming off the question marks of 2008 I would imagine he would cost that much, maybe more, if he has a solid postseason under his belt. I am not sure he can give you a full season of quality pitching that would make the $5 million worth it. Also I am a big believer in moving forward and not getting caught up in the past. On the flip side he may finally have recovered from the shoulder injury and be capable of giving you the type of pitching from earlier in his Mets career. I know Pedro isn’t the version we saw with Boston, but circa 2005-2006 isn’t bad either. If Martinez is healthy I might have more faith in him than John Maine, Oliver Perez, or Mike Pelfrey. I am not sure if that is compliment about Pedro or an indictment on the failed development of the Mets three young hurlers.
Here is another thought. If the lack of a fourth starter hurts the Yankees during the World Series how will it look that Brian Cashman and company didn’t even bother to see if Pedro in Pinstripes was a possibility? He seemed to navigate an AL lineup just fine last night.
Just a couple of things to chew on.
