Francesa “Too Busy” to Talk NFL and NBA

By Mike Silva ~ October 27th, 2009. Filed under: Mike Silva.

Another great quote from Mike Francesa yesterday. He talked about how he “doesn’t have any time during the show” to squeeze in the NBA this week and finds it hard to find time to talk about the NFL. Is this a joke? Last time I looked WFAN is not positioned as a “baseball only” talk show. Obviously the NBA and NFL take a backseat to the Yankees, but to say you can’t even do one segment is ludicrous. I sat in the car for an hour (before I switched off) and listened to Mike talk about the Yankees payroll advantage. He took calls from the same 10 people that call everyday between 2 and 3pm. Is this a topic that is necessary? Can Mike do any better than this? Obviously not.

Let’s contrast as Brandon Tierney over at ESPN who had Giants beat reporter Ralph Vacchiano yesterday and today Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni. He had time to move away from baseball for a few minutes.

Question to Mark Chernoff and yes I would like you to email me back: Why can’t you talk NBA with the Knicks season starting tomorrow? Why is Mike Francesa asking Antonio Pierce (a paid guest the only kind you can obtain) about the Yankees? According to a reader Pierce sounded annoyed. Why does ESPN kick your butt with guests? Why is Evan Roberts (the real star of the station) given second fiddle to Francesa who, quite simply, isn’t any good anymore? Do you honestly think someone else couldn’t perform 1-6 pm? Personally I think it’s the time slot, not the personality, that is the star. Evan seems to be able to get guests, but the “big shot” can’t. How about you start to address NYBD’s criticisms for a change?

Your star show doesn’t even do a good job covering baseball. Sweeny Murti and Eddie C are great, but where are the guests? Maybe you should sprinkle in a little NBA and NHL for 30 minutes a day. I don’t need to hear the same ignorant callers.  Is it because YES paid for your studio and demands the most Yankee talk during Francesa? I think I might be on to something.

Of course we will never hear from Chernoff. They are too cowardly to address NYBD. Why address me (a listener and customer) when it’s easy to brag about inflated ratings and ignore me. Mr. Chernoff the iceberg is ahead, will you steer the ship away in time? Will you go to the top deck like Captain Smith and go down with the ship? Something tells me you won’t.

Your station and its star are a joke. This is from a 25-54 listener that is tuning out more and more between 1-6. It’s Time to wake up my friend, stop the excuses, and tell your boy to do a little work. You can’t just do Mad Dog surprise visits. It’s not enough.

The topic has played a part, but I’ve tuned out more and more recently. I’ve started listening to ESPN even more between 1-6, which is something I rarely even consider on other time slots unless it’s a commercial, or college sports talk.

I think the only NHL talk Francesa has done recently was his interview with Charles Wang about the lighthouse project a couple of weeks ago. Then again, he doesn’t know anything about hockey, so do we want to listen to him go on about it? He claims it’s because he gets no callers about it, but why would anyone call him about something that he has nothing to say on?

Bro, great points , but then you blew it by saying Evan is the star of the station ……… agree on Francessa, but common with Evan, he sucks

The Yankees are in the Series for the first time since 2003, Mike. THAT’s the sports news-cycle right now. I’m a Mets fan, and even I understand the coverage. There’s a huge buzz in the air (even for those of us rooting against the Yanks!;). Who the heck wants to talk about the Knicks at this point? What’s next, Hockey? You’re off the mark on this one.

It’s not about being “good” or “bad”; it’s about results and response. For someone who’s not “good anymore”, Francesa’s surely doing a great job luring you in. To quote Mike’s good friend Bill Parcells, “Consider yourself sucked.”

Francesa is the same guy that speculated about Matsui playing the field in the World Series. This is a prime example of his inaccurate analysis and lazy preparation.

Solid argument. I like to listen to Mike’s open and for john heyman. But lately I find myself tuning out after the 1st hour. Until the yanks and phils play theres not to much to talk about. It really dries up and not talking knicks (not that theres much to talk about) or nba, etc becomes noticable. Silva’s right about the callers its the same guys. I don’t like the fact he cuts the callers off so fast. Show some guts give me alittle more give and take there. But what i’m really starting to notice and im glad silva brought it up is the lack of interviews w/atheltes nobody comes on the show. I like mike though but he can be tough to take way to rip bill simmons. Oh and your crazy about evan being a star seriously. He takes over for tank and youve just sent wfan back 20yrs. Why are Joe and evan going to pa. anyway so can join the chorus and rag on the yanks? It just shows you the backward mentality of some met fans.

Francesa didn’t “speculate”; he asked Joe Girardi about Matsui and Girardi didn’t rule out the possibility.

I can’t believe I’m defending Francesa, but he’s a troll and you’ve been successfully trolled. Congrats.
