Be Careful What You Wish For

We are a mere 24 hours from Game 1 of the 2009 World Series. The downtime is always challenging for those in the media because after a day or two the stories dry up. It also is a time where the players can get themselves in trouble. All it takes is one statement to provide bulletin board material for the opposition. In just a couple of days both the Phillies and members of the media have gone out of their way to disrespect the Yankees. Although I believe the Phils will win the World Series I don’t believe it will be easy. My message is be careful what you wish for because you might just get it.
During the postgame celebration there was talk of the Phillies wanting to take on Derek Jeter and the Yankees. Phils president Dave Montgomery said they do “want the Yankees” and “not to forget that it’s the Phillies that are the defending champs.” Of course, this is benign compared to the incredulous statement by Sam Donnellon of the Philadelphia Daily News who believes “when Yanks go to bed at night, they dream about hitting like the 2009 Phillies.” Welcome to the other side of town Sam you officially have been mocked by noMaas for that silly statement.
A little spice in a series always makes things more fun. I think the Phillies must remember that, unlike the Mets, the Yankees are not going to be intimidated by their confidence. Trash talk can also come back to haunt a team. Ask former Yankee David Cone who called Jay Howell a “high school pitcher” when pitching for the Mets against the Dodgers in the 88’ NLCS. The next night Los Angeles came out and blew the doors off Coney. It very well could have woken the Dodgers up and be one of the reasons for the Mets shocking loss.
As I mentioned earlier the Phils are a confident and fearless bunch. It’s one of the main reasons why, all things being equal, they will beat the Yankees in the World Series. That doesn’t mean they are immune to the repercussions that are the fallout from trash talk. You got what you wanted- the Yankees. It might not be as fun as you think. Be careful what you wish for because you might just get it.
