Yanks in Lead for Chapman?

By Mike Silva ~ October 25th, 2009. Filed under: Offseason Speculation.

Mike Harrington of The Buffalo News believes the Yanks are in the lead for Cuban defector Aroldis Chapman. Reports are that Chapman will be on hand for Game 6 tonight. Knowing the Red Sox are also in the hunt makes this reminiscent of the Jose Contreras bidding back in 2003.

The Mets had a meeting with Chapman, but pulled out quickly because of the $40-$60 million dollar price tag.

Just last week our very own Frank Russo told us the Yankees were going to put money into pitching and potentially pass on Matt Holliday.

If you remember I thought the Yankees were in a better position to sign Chapman because they could afford to make a mistake. By no means is Chapman a sure thing. Even Jose Contreras needed time to develop in the big leagues. Hopefully the Yankees remember how they gave up on Contreras too quickly and show Chapman some patience.

Chapman might even give Joba Chamberlain some competition next spring for a spot on the team. If the Cuban refugees is as good as reports indicate we might be seeing Joba on episodes of NBC’s “The Office” next season.

The really sad thing about this post is the fact that it’s being repeated over and over again. The Yankees do not have the lead on Chapman, and they are not passing on Holliday. Anyone who thinks the Yankees are going to have Chapman try out for a place on the team against Chamberlain please stand up, because we need to know who the idiots are. The Yankees do not need pitching that bad they they’ll pay $15 million a year for an unknown prospect.

Fred. If the Red Sox get involved maybe they swoop in on Holliday, but right now it doesn’t appear that way. Chapman’s people are very tight lipped about his negotiations so you very well may be right on that one
