Wang Gone?
By Mike Silva ~ October 24th, 2009. Filed under: Mike Silva.
After the injury to Chien Ming Wang during the summer Frank Russo mentioned the possibility that he would not be tendered a contract this offseason. Tyler Kepner of the NY Times caught up with Wang on Thursday. He confirmed Frank’s report saying that “nothing is sure” about his contract status. Even if the Yankees non tender Wang they could sign him to a deal for less money.
Shoulder injuries are always bad news. It’s anyone’s guess if Wang will be able to return to his mid nineties velocity and have the same devastating sinker. Frank again reiterated his belief that Wang will be non tendered during last night’s show. He has his doubts about whether the Yanks will even attempt to resign him. Here is a question – what about the Mets?
Wang won’t be ready until May at the earliest. Obviously he isn’t someone that you could rely on as a front of the rotation starter, but he would be a nice low risk high reward 2010 signing. Even if Wang can give you numbers somewhere between 2007 and 2008 he would be a fine back end of the rotation starter. A move to the National League might be just what the doctor ordered (no pun intended) coming off the injury. In any event he should have no problem finding takers if the Yankees decide to part ways.

Oh hell yea. I have been hoping for this for a while. If he gets non-tendered and they offer him less money, just offer him the same amount he received last year. His peripherals have never been spectacular, but somehow he has always outperformed his FIP and tRA. I would love to snag him.

You are a racist (and borderline illiterate). You make me ashamed to root for the same team you do.

hey kjs, first of all I graduated with an English degree from William Paterson College, second of all, racist, I’m the biggest Obamamaniac alive. Your just afraid to voice the truth about the latino’s on my team. Look now that Jeff Wilpon and John Ricco are calling the shots! They just dumped 5 players from their 40 man roster, all latino’s! Are they racist, no, they just know too many passive types like them can’t win! So if you think your ownership is rascist, maybe go root for the mariners.

Tampamike — No guts? Yes Beltran and his insane numbers from 2006-2008 had no “guts” whatsoever. What in the hell are you talking about? And I would LOVE to take Jack Z from the M’s. He doesn’t buy into that “guts” “step on your throat” guys you are talking about. In other words, he isn’t illogical like you.

Also, if you are using Brett Myers as a real American that is pretty bad. Remember him beating his wife? How about dressing his son in confederate clothing at ST? That being said if he is cheap I would take him. That is the point of this, buy-low candidates.

Please try to refrain from the ethnic comments. I appreciate the baseball talk, but we don’t want to hit below the belt.

I agree with MetsKnicksRutgers.
I would look into Myers. The concern I have with him is, if he struggles, NY fans will throw his anti-NY remarks, the wife situation, and racist overtones in his face. If Wang is healthy (big IF) I think Citi Field and the NL is where he belongs.
Howard and I have talked about Wang in great depth on the show. If you haven’t read his article from 2007 check it out:
http://www.observer.com/2007/chien-ming-wang-occasional-ace
Wang was never an ace, but a good middle of the rotation starter.
The Mets will not get a John Lackey, I am fairly confident in that assertion so these are the types of players they are going to have to look at.

I never hit below the belt, latino players aren’t great players they are fantastic players! The reality is you win in the playoffs with heart and toughness. Read Jon Heyman’s column the other day about the phillies and Chase Utley. Dodger players said that Victorino is plain out tough! That’s what wins gentlemen. heck I know all about brett Myers off the feild crap. But look at last years playoff game against C.C Sabathia and the Brewers. Myers flat out intimidated C.C., got hits off him, forced a walk on him and was fired up in the dugout and C.C. lost focus and eventually the game. My ultimate mangerial choice for this team would be Mickey Hatcher. he was intense as aplayer and now successful under Scosia. We are nowhere close to being tough!

“hey kjs, first of all I graduated with an English degree from William Paterson College, [run on] second of all, racist, I’m the biggest Obamamaniac alive. Your [You are = you're] just afraid to voice the truth about the latino’s [uppercase Latino] on my team. Look now that Jeff Wilpon and John Ricco are calling the shots! [Tense? Logic? Sense?] They just dumped 5 players from their 40 man roster, all latino’s! [Still can't spell Latino.] Are they racist, no, they just know too many passive types like them can’t win! [Incoherent] So if you think your ownership is rascist [You can't even spell what you are], maybe go root for the mariners [use uppercase for nouns].”
O Lord! Now we share an alma mater! BTW, it’s now William Paterson University. I graduated with an English/Writing degree in the late 1980s when it was WPC. The 1986 run was on during my studentship there; they were better times. I imagine Phil Cioffari is still teaching, though Phillip Kloss was the best. (Stanley Wertheim the worst.)
Every word you wrote in your initial post was racist. Then you reinvented yourself as a bigger fool.
BTW, here’s my copy edit of your last, pathetic post:
“Hey, kjs, first of all I graduated with an English degree from William Paterson College; second of all, racist?—I’m the biggest Obamamaniac alive. You’re just afraid to voice the truth about the Latino’s on my team. Look—now Jeff Wilpon and John Ricco are calling the shots! They just dumped five players from their forty–man roster, all Latino’s! Are they racist? No, they just know too many passive types like them can’t win! So if you think your ownership is racist, maybe you should go root for the Mariners.”
Thus, let’s deconstruct your racism now that I’ve aided you in making you semi-coherent:
“Some of my favorite Presidents are half African-American.”
“Latinos are passive.”
Latinos are a ‘them.’ ”
“If you don’t agree with my contempt for the ‘Other,’ be they of various Chinese cultures or Spanish-speaking–cultures, get lost!”
Dude, maybe your wife left you. Maybe you lost your job. Maybe you’re drinking too much. But get some help.

tampamike:
do yourself a favor and get out of that hot FL sun, it’s obviously affecting you! you may not be a racist, but you sure sound like one. you seem to only want so called ‘tough’ players as long they’re white! that heyman article also mentioned rollins as being a big part of their grittiness, yet you chose to mention only victorino, utley, and the racist wife batterer, myers! and instead of glorifying myers for his win over sabathia, did you consider the reason he got beat in PHI last year was because MIL was treating him like a beat-up rented mule at the end of last season, throwing him every 3 days and letting him go 8/9 innings just about every time out! now that he’s pretty much on normal rest every time out, he’s pitching like a stud! yes, the Mets can use more gritty guys, but something else you neglect or failed to realize… all those players are system guy. clearly PHI is doing something right in indentifying those guys early on. and as they have multiple areas to address low-risk, high-reward scenarios are what they need to look at.
October 24th, 2009 at 1:16 pm
John Heyman used hyperbole there. Is that the reason the Phils won? Or was it Broxton blowing a game? Or Cliff Lee pitching very well? And are you really gonna use a 1 (!!!) game sample of last years playoffs to say that an OPPOSING pitcher intimidated another pitcher! That is outlandish man! That Brett Myers isn’t half the pitcher CC is, and I think it has more to do with the Brew Crew goin in a slump at the wrong time last year.
Also, google Heyman’s reasoning for Tex being this year’s MVP over Mauer. It just oozes with opinion rather than objectivity. That is not a good reason to back up an argument.

oops my bad, I didn’t realize I logged on to a passive website. Must be all this agrression coming from my bad back nine today. You’d think being retired at 50 and living on the 6th fairway would make me a better linkster. Sorry kjs you just go back to your basement bedroom at moms house. You must be tired from the late shift at the security guard gig at the parking garage. I won’t bother you no more. What’s that? Oh its mommy calling you and she made dinner for you. Probably nachos and salsa! How ironic! KJS, chairman of the los basement 30 year old gang.

Well, kja, considering that you graduated as an English/Writing major from William Paterson University and that your favorite English professors were Phil Cioffari and Robert (not “Phillip”) Kloss, it’s small wonder that your prose is semi-literate.
I suppose I was a rather poor teacher in that post-graduate junior high school. It’s difficult to maintain standards in an institution that calls itself a university when the average verbal SAT is 390 and most students can’t or won’t read.
