CARTER NAMED MANAGER OF SAILFISH

(Palm Beach, Fla., October 13, 2009) – 2009 Ducks manager Gary Carter was today named manager of the Palm Beach Atlantic University Sailfish. The Sailfish compete on the NCAA Division II level, and are a Christian liberal arts college founded in 1968. The move brings the former Ducks skipper, a Palm Beach County resident since 1982, closer to home.

“We wish Gary the best of luck in the future,” said Ducks principal owner Frank Boulton. “It became apparent that if Gary were not to get a Major League job that his second choice would be to manage close to home. The managing job at Palm Beach Atlantic affords him this opportunity. We had an exciting 2009 10th anniversary season and Gary Carter played a major role in that. He will forever be a part of Ducks history.”

Carter managed the Ducks to an overall record of 74-66 and a berth in the Atlantic League playoffs where the club dropped a hard fought five game series to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs.

Former manager and current pitching coach Dave LaPoint is on a short list of candidates to replace Carter. No timetable has been set to name a replacement.

Glad to see that Gary continues to chase his dream. I didn’t get the feeling from my time at the ballpark that major league teams were going to come calling. MLB and its teams are not the most forgiving group of people and Gary pining for Willie Randolph’s job in 2008 is going to leave a scar for a long time. Carter certainly can motivate a group of 25 men, but I have my doubts about his ability to manage a game and, more importantly, a pitching staff. Perhaps coaching in college will alleviate some of the doubts. Who knows, maybe it becomes his calling and Carter is able to live out his dream of managing while still staying close to his family. Good luck Gary.

As for who will take over the Ducks, don’t be surprised if Butch Hobson’s (currently managing Southern Maryland) name comes up. Frank Boulton had great things to say about Butch before the decisive playoff Game 5 back in September. Not sure of Butch’s contract status, but if he is available. No inside information with that, just a hunch.
