Thoughts About the Washington “Misfits”
By Mike Silva ~ September 10th, 2008. Filed under: Mike Silva.
I felt compelled after watching the last two games against Washington to write a short commentary about the Washington Nationals. As I mentioned last week, The Nats will play a huge role in determining who will win the NL East. To their credit, they are playing hard and to win for the second September in a row. My question is where was the passion from April to August?
On that point, Keith Hernandez called Washington a “misbehaving team” that’s kind and, in the spirit of politeness and journalistic credibility, I will go with that descriptor. Perhaps someone could answer some additional questions for me:
What is bothering Elijah Dukes? He has a 24/7 babysitter appointed by the team and is finally playing full time and hitting. How much more does he want? I never heard Gary Cohen with more disgust in his voice then when he was discussing the antics of Dukes. Quick prediction… Dukes will be out of baseball within two years. He doesn’t have the mental stability to play on this level.
Is Mike Pelfrey is starting to annoy right handed batters? That hard inside movement has already angered Cody Ross and now Elijah Dukes. Is facing Pelfrey not healthy for the mentally unstable?
Who stole Christian Guzman and replaced him with a power hitter?
Where are all the Mets fans that wanted Manny Acta to take over because he would “discipline” this team? You have to question how much control this guy has over his team. This year, against the Mets alone, you have seen more bizarre and unprofessional behavior out of that team to last you a lifetime.
Has Lastings Milledge confused Shea Stadium with Yellowstone Park? I think I parked my car in the same spot as he was positioned in the outfield. Give Milledge credit, he is playing better, but I still stand by my Good Bye and Good Riddence article in March.
When Lastings MIlledge is the model citizen on a ballclub what does that say about the rest of the team?
Should be a fun four game series next week in DC. How can you not enjoy spending 4 hours a night with Elijah, Lastings, A-Hern, and the gang?

You’re last two Sunday night baseball wraps have been in incredibly poor taste. The irony is that you devote a good portion of your last one to disparaging the puerility and vulgarity of Craig Carton– well warranted– while conducting yourself little better.
The juvenile gloating about the Yankees’ fate was bad enough the previous week, from playing the Doors to an arrested version of the Yankees fight theme.
But then you outdid yourself the this week by browbeating a Yankee fan, who was forensically ill-equipped to defend himself. If you’re going to heap such patronizing derision on a Yankees fans for the tepid allegiance, at least invite someone capable of defending himself and rebutting your fatuous insinuation that Yankees fans are bandwagon jumpers. A canard anyway.
Another irony: it actually took one of your guests to introduce some honesty and remind you and Howard that last year while the Mets were collapsing, Mets fans weren’t even showing up to the ballpark.
Look if you and Howard are Mets fans and Yankees haters– why do those two trait appear symbiotic– at least be honest about it. Have some integrity and call your show Mets Baseball Digest because your pretense to cover the Yankees with an objectivity travesties your professionalism and narrows your audience.
Between Silva and Carton, I’m reminded of Freud’s observation about the narcissism of insignificant difference.
