Dear Philly: No Thanks
By Mike Silva ~ September 22nd, 2009. Filed under: Mike Silva.
I wanted to take a moment to respond to (another) snide remark from the city of brotherly love. This time it’s a letter to Mets fans from a site called Phillies Nation. So you don’t have to provide them with any additional traffic I will re-post the letter here:
Hey Mets Fans!
Hey stupid! The Mets are a very bad team, and an even worse organization.
They got a brand new stadium that celebrates the history of other (better) teams from New York and other (better) players.
They earned the ignominious title of “biggest choke artists ever” after their 2007 collapse. The 2008 collapse was almost as laughable. Wait, 2009 was kind of a joke too. Injuries are not an excuse.
Your owners overspend for players even though they got hosed in a ponzi scheme.
Remember when Castillo dropped that ball against the Yankees?
If you want to become a Phillies fan, we’d be happy to have you. Or just leave a comment…that is, if you’re able to form complete sentences.
Dear Phillies Nation
Thanks for your invite to become part of your universe. Unfortunately, I will have to decline. Why you ask? You are on the verge of a third straight division title, already have one World Series under your belt, and a core of players that could compete for a few more years. It’s not the team, or the players, although Shane Victorino certainly bugs me, but rather you. Yes you the Philadelphia fan. I rather lose here in New York than win 90 miles south. Sounds hard to believe? Well, not really.
Mets fans have their issues believe me. They can be paranoid, weird, and a bit eccentric. It sure beats the general nastiness which is your modus operandi. You see, you guys never quite can accept the fact that you’re second in sports, culture, and overall quality of life. There is nothing wrong with that, someone has to come in #2, but an inferiority complex has set in. This is why you have resorted to rooting for the opposition to fail versus rooting for your team to win. You know better than anyone that even when you win, you lose, because of your real estate. Even Santa Claus wasn’t spared from your wrath. Think about it, the poor guys braves the frigid cold to give you free gifts and you still couldn’t cut him slack. How miserable can a city be?
The Mets, as you have pointed out, have their flaws as a team and organization. However, no matter how bad things can get I still wake up and thank God because things could always be worse. I could be living in Philadelphia and feeling just as miserable as you. Thanks for the offer, but I rather lose in New York than win in Philly. The way I see it your 15 minutes of fame has only about 7 minutes remaining. Why get in on the back end. It would be like investing in Eron right before their crash.
Regards,
Mike Silva and your friends at New York Baseball Digest.

WOW! That is great. lol You just made my morning. Phillies fans have such an inferiority complex it is disgusting. They are obsessed with New York the same way Boston is. They seriously need a life.

I, for one, don’t have an inferiority complex. Personally, I think both letters are a waste of time. But… focusing on the main (or at least recent main) competitor is what most sports fans do. Enjoy the rivalry… if the Mets can keep up. I could care less about NY or living there. Most Philly dwellers are the same way. I think it might be you that has a superiority complex. There are a lot of other, nicer, places to live than NYC.
And… explain to me why we have an inferiority complex with the Mets?? The Yankees might be able to make that happen… but the Mets? Really…?? Hell, the Braves are an even more likely choice in our own division.

As a Phillies fan I like to think that most Philadelphia fans really DON’T care about New York and the failures of the Mets. In fact I put it all behind me because I do not wish to waste time thinking about a team that was depleted by injuries (they CAN be an excuse) for just about the entire season.
Do I like when the Mets lose? As a Phillies fan, yes, of course I do.
Do I like going out of my way to mock the Mets and their fans, especially when their season went the way it did. No freakin’ way.
It is idiots like whoever wrote this on behalf of Phillies Nation that give the Philly sports fan a black eye. Why on Earth would we realistically care about a team that finished in fourth place? coming off a World Series is great and winning two straight division titles was nice, but some of the glory has gone straight to the heads of a number of Phillies fans.
Though I loathe the fact that you felt a need to bring up one bizarre and humorous Santa Claus incident that HAPPENED FORTY YEARS AGO, showing that you are as much of a hack as any media personality outside of Philadelphia who can not do some actual research on a topic before feeling a desire to bring up the same old garbage everyone has heard time and time again, I respect your reply to Phillies Nation.
The Mets had a rough season, but they will be better next year and the Phillies can not rest in this division.
In closing, I do hope that you and your readers realize that not every Philadelphia fan should be lumped in with the idiots you chastise.

Ha…you guys read way too much into this with all your psycho-analysis. I wish baseball was still fun for you.
