Yanks Claim Chris Carter

First place and the playoffs isn’t enough?
Apparently the Yankees have claimed Red Sox OF Chris Carter so the Mets will have to wait till the offseason to obtain one of the players to be named later for Billy Wagner.
It would have been nice to get a feel for him during the month of September and see how he fits. Is this a testament to Carter’s ability or the Yankees just tweaking the Mets? I think Carter is better than we may think.
Update: Buster Olney believes the Yankees were trying to “squeeze” the Red Sox 40 man roster maneuverability. This may make it difficult to add Paul Byrd to the roster in September which, by the way, is a prerequisite to his contract.

It’s been suggested that this is more of a tweak at the Red Sox because it requires them to keep Carter on their 40-man roster for the rest of the season, possibly limiting other moves they might make. It doesn’t seem likely that the Yankees would twit the Mets in such a petty way unless they want Carter for themselves, which seems doubtful.

I wouldn’t put to much stock in Olney’s 40-man roster theory. The Red Sox currently have two empty spots on the 40-man (Billy Wagner has already been added), and have several players that they could just release if they needed to open up a spot. If they signed Paul Byrd, there is already an empty spot for him (and they’d still have another empty spot). There really isn’t a legitamate explanation for this, other than just trying to screw with the Red Sox (which in this case is a really class-less move). Stuff like this is why teams treat the Yankees differently when making deals with them (see Garland, John). I actually felt bad for them about the Garland incident before this classless maneuver.

Whys it classless? Why let the Red Sox maneuver if you can stop it? Its part of the game. And if Carter is so good why wouldnt the Yanks want him in their system??

This is a lower than scum move against the Mets. The oh so mighty yankees just couldn’t pass up an oppurtunity to stick it to the mets. It has nothing to do with the Red Sox and the 40 man roster. The Sox have plenty of pitchers and don’t really need Paul byrd that bad. This was a shot aimed towards the Mets. They were going to have Carter play in the final month to get a good look at him. Now the Mets can’t do that. Scumbags!!! I hope that the Red Sox kick the living crap out of them in the playoffs. And next year…..It will be the Mets turn!!!

Next year it will be the Mets turn to what? Surround their core five with slop again and get burned again? Watch as the Ollie Perez contract, which was ridiculous at the time, continues to explode in their collective faces?

Chris Carter was kept back first by Arizona, then Boston. When he started for Boston he hit for basehits, then put down to Nantucket to get old. They are holding him back so that he won’t compete against them. Now who is getting screwed. He should have been a starter 3 years ago. Boston deserves what there inept ability. It stsrts with upper management.
