Bird Killer, Softball Antics, The Next No Name Star

By Mike Silva ~ July 21st, 2009. Filed under: Morning Digest.

- Going into last night’s game Andy Pettitte was 25-6 with a 3.73 ERA against the Orioles. By far the most wins against any team.

- The Mets beat the Nats with Livan Hernandez on the mound. Not first base. Not third base. Pitching. Can we at least not stoop to softball team antics the rest of the season?

- I watched the replay of the Molina throw to Coke.  I think Roberts was safe, but what a great play to save a run. You know you have something good going when you can’t use Hughes or Rivera and still squeak out a win.

- Jeff Francoeur is a guy that will wind up winning over Mets fans and becoming a crowd favorite. You heard it here first.

- You know things are good when Michael Kay and Ken Singleton start the postgame out with concerns over players not wearing their helmet when mobbed at home plate.

- Daniel Murphy needs to slow down with the throws to second on a bunt. Keith Hernandez he ain’t.

- Prediction: Sergio Mitre will become the next no name to excel as a Yankee. Think Aaron Small and Shawn Chacon circa 2005.

- Amazing how quick Omar confirmed the story about his job security. Now only if we can get that with the injury report.

- There have been times this season that Hideki Matsui looked old and done. With an OPS of .885 you could argue that he is having a better season than David Wright.

- Shocking how many walks the Mets bullpen has given up. The fact that the starting rotation is last in the NL in bases on balls, and the bullpen near the bottom, would spell doom for this team even with Reyes, Delgado, and Beltran.

- Who is Tyler Clippard (3 innings, 5 K’s) and where is the version the Yankees traded?

- Why is Corey Sullivan on this team? I understand versatility, but how about trying to get Nick Evans as much big league time as possible. Think 2010!
