Heyman: Mets Turned Down Halladay

By Mike Silva ~ July 20th, 2009. Filed under: Rumor Mill.

This just in via Jon Heyman

Mets rejected request of package of F-mart, Niese, Parnell and Ruben Tejada for Halladay.

This was a very reasonable request by Toronto. I would have to guess the Mets are averse to paying the price to keep Halladay around and don’t want to give up four of their better prospects. As I said with Brian Cashman on last night’s show, and this goes double for Minaya, he better be right on these guys or he will regret watching Halladay beat him in Philly.

Is Omar THAT tone deaf? Or is he convinced that he has 3 years and not one to rebuild this team? Having Doc & Johan for the rest of THIS year gives them a realistic shot at the WC, let alone what it does for 2010. When Francesa mentioned it, I took it as him just
tweaking the Met fans. But when it got real last night I pulled over in my car and screamed at the radio. I feel like Charlton Heston
at the end of Planet Of The Apes. Does anyone over there read?

    Only the Mets, MRF 07.21

I knew Jays would get a lot less for Halliday than what the press was speculating. Few teams can afford the guy and then give up talent. It looks like the Mets can’t afford the guy either. That’s the way it goes.

IF this rumor is true, could it be that the Jays wanted the Mets to take the Vernon Wells contract off their hands as part of this deal? If that’s the case, I don’t blame Minaya for rejecting the deal because that’s one awful contract. If, on the other hand, Wells didn’t figure in it…I’m lost. And so are the Mets.

Of course, it all depends on the truth of this story, and I have to admit that it strains credulity.
