Elevators, Incompetence, Credibility, Giving Back
By Mike Silva ~ July 5th, 2009. Filed under: Morning Digest.
- The Yankees fought back and came from behind for the 24th time this year. The baseball season is about hitting benchmarks, 5 games over, 10 games, over, 20 games over and beyond. They are on pace to win about 95 games and should be 15 games over this week. The elevator is going up in the Bronx.
- The Mets continue to shoot themselves in the foot. I go back to my WGBB show in early June where I said this team could survive the brutal 32 games stretch leading up to the All Star break if they played solid defense, smart and fundamental baseball, and pitched fairly well. None of those have been on display in weeks and the results since June 1st are proof of that. The elevator is going down.
- The Mets have played sloppy and dumb this year, but what in the world was Robinson Cano thinking when he bunted with the count 3-0? Michael Kay sounded like he was going to strangle him for Girardi.
- Good job by Yanksblog picking the ESPN report that puts the Yankees 107 of 122 in the “giving back” standings. This may be more indicative of the elitist attitude at the new stadium because I felt George did a great job with working with the fans when it came to game cancellations, rain delays, etc. In case you were wondering, the Mets were ranked 82, and the Knicks were 121.
- I listened to the Mets/Phils game on the radio, but I was told that FOX started with that stupid split screen nonsense when Manny Ramirez came to the plate. Message to FOX: I don’t know what your focus group told you, but split screens annoy fans when it’s for trivial things like a Manny Ramirez at-bat. I still remember having to squint to watch the Knicks Finals game in 94′ because of OJ Simpson. Looking back that was also a waste of time. If I want to get an update about Manny I will look it up. Thank you – the fans.
- Jon Heyman reported that the Phils offered some prospects for Wang. Frank Russo reiterated to me yesterday that there is nothing to the Wang rumors other than teams asking about his availability. Looks like it is one of those lost seasons for Wang and we should start to think about 2010 with him.
- Can the fans of Philadelphia get over the whole Rocky series? How many times must me see the Phanatic beating up a guy in a Mets cap to the Rocky theme? He is a fictitious character. What kind of city props up an up a movie star as your hero? What’s next, Sly Stallone as mayor of the city?
- Marco Scutaro would sure look nice in a Mets uniform with his .283 batting average and .381 OBP. Alas, that ship sailed years ago.
- Kudos to Bobby O, Keith, and Ron Darling for speaking their minds on SNY. I am sure a nasty gram will be sent by ownership, but it sounds like the former 86′ers don’t care. The in game performance by that trio, Cohen, and Burkhardt is what holds that network up. If the Mets continue to slide we can expect more of Foreclosure Profits: Season 2?
- Robby Cano is 0 for his last 20 with runners in scoring position. Bryan Hoch writes about how he needs to regain his confidence, but what stood out to me is that he wasn not available for comment after the game. Very disappointing.

To compare, Luis Castillo stayed after the game to answer questions after he botched the pop up, then came early and despite the Mets PR guy telling him he didn’t have to, he sat and answered questions about it before the next, too. He stated he had to man up and take responsibility.

Thanks for the mention, Mr. Silva. I do think it’s low, even with the stadium stuff – though it’s probably fueled by reaction to the stadium or perception of that reaction. Then again, I tend not to look at these rankings as a whole lot more than fun.
The Title Track metric seems like kind of a mess to me.
