Is Joba Goose Gossage?

This is sure to stoke the flames.

Anthony Rieber made an excellant comparison at The Final Score Newsday Blog. He compared Joba Chamberlain to Goose Gossage as a starter.
Goose Gossage as a starter:
W-L 9-22
ERA 4.49
Starts 37
Innings per start 6 2/3
IP 252.2
H 262
BB 104
K 162
ERA as reliever: 2.77

Obviously he was much better as a reliever. Hall of Fame better.

Joba Chamberlain as a starter:
W-L 7-3
ERA 3.38
Starts 27
Innings per start 5 1/3
IP 146.1
H 139
BB 65
K 147
ERA as reliever: 1.53

Obviously he was much better as a reliever. Hall of Fame better.

Joba is way better than Gossage as a starter, but it’s an interesting point. The reality that Yankees fans must accept is that most members of the media will not let the bullpen discussion go until Joba proves that he is a top of the rotation starter. This includes going deep into games and actually winning some starts. Ultimately, as much as we hate to admit it, top of the rotation starters win games not just produce good peripheral numbers. Also, if he can’t win with an offense like the Yankees, when will he?

he has to start going at least 6+

Cashman has no intention of putting Joba back in the pen. Let it go, already.

And if you think Joba is just magically going to throw 100 MPH again if he’s put back the pen, you’re dead wrong and haven’t been paying attention.

Like Hughes, a couple of ticks is one thing. Most pitchers pick up an extra mile or two on their fastball when they go to the pen because all they do is let it fly and empty the tank.

But he’s not going to gain 5-7 MPH if he goes back to the pen. You’re living in the Land of Oz if you think that’s the case.

It’s not going to happen. Silva is tired of talking about Joba yet he continues to talk about him. Well, stop talking about him.

Those who want to jump off the bandwagon should go right ahead. You’ll be clawing and scratching to get back on when he starts to feel it and get on a roll.

Joba doesn’t have jack to prove to the media. They don’t make the decisions. He’s not moving from the rotation and that’s the bottom line.

They tore Hughes apart last season because he struggled and now he’s the darling of the magical 8th inning that only the elite of the elite of the elite could possibly handle.

It’s all BS. The 8th inning isn’t some impossible role that few can handle. People have really lost their minds on this issue. It’s amazing.

    Give. It. Up.

Joba in no way belongs in the bullpen. Get over the 8th inning.
