Lenny Dykstra- Genius or Delusional?

If you haven’t seen the HBO Real Sports, with the Lenny Dykstra follow up by Bernard Goldberg, you are missing a classic piece.
About a year ago Lenny was all over the news talking about his “second career” in investing. He showed HBO the private jets, $19 million dollar mansion, and his investing prowess. We even got to see him live in the WFAN studio with Mike Francesa a few months back.
It seems that Lenny might not be the financial genius that we all originally thought. Creditors and former employees are all laying charges that Dykstra owes them money. Estimates have him $60 million in the hole. Some say it’s the economy, but after reading this article, I think Lenny approaches his business career much the same he did with his big league career: with reckless passion, but very little thought and planning.
Take the time to watch the piece. Goldberg shows up to Lenny’s mansion where there is no furniture or anyone home. You see him walk around this big empty house looking for Lenny and even placing a phone call. When Lenny does appear, he seems to be half listening to the questions and completely in denial about his situation. He responds to questions with typical athlete clichés, uses the term luck often, and flashes $1,000 dollars cash to prove his solvency. It is one of the most bizarre interviews I have ever seen.
The piece ends with Dykstra claiming that he will be selling private jets as his new business venture. Not sure how is he going to pull that off without the use of his employees credit cards (yes, you heard me right; he used his employees credit cards to pay for stuff). It makes you wonder what the rest of us are doing wrong. If Lenny succeeds and makes his millions back should we consider him a genius? Personally, I think the guy is delusional. Find time to watch the piece and decide for yourself.
Side Note: There were two other features during the show. One was about Jim Brown and Bill Russell. The other was about a scuba diving program for the soldiers at Guantanamo Bay. I found the piece about Gitmo fascinating because of the setup of the area. Everyone hears about the prison, but very rarely the daily work stress the troops endure. The diving program has helped them relieve their work stresses and stay, for lack of a better word, sane. There even is a village on the island for them to live that looks very much like a town near you (Mickey D’s, picket fences, cars, etc.). We keep hearing about all the evils of Gitmo, but very rarely see a piece about the other side of the situation. Regardless of your position on the topic you should give it a watch.

Could be worse he could be talking to lizards like Darren Daulton.

I got the impression from the follow-up, as well as the initial interview, that Dykstra was DRUNK or on some kind of pills. Has he always SLURRED like that when he talks?

He slurred like that when he was on with Mike Francesa. Great observation, maybe there is something wrong
